good culture, management not supportive
Research Associate (Former Employee) –  San Rafael, CADecember 10, 2018
The work balance was great, but steady change in culture from a supportive learning environment to a "machine" repeating the same activities daily that felt stagnant.
Pros
gym on site, stable
Cons
management more critical than supportive

Pharmaceutical company
Research Associate (Former Employee) –  Novato,CA and San Rafael, CADecember 4, 2018
Worked in bioanalytical testing area specialized in running PD(PharmacoDynamics) assays. Measured the accumulation of antibodies specific for drug immune response in the body. This insured safety of the patients. There was annual events where coworkers could hang out, and workplace culture was chill.

Good for your personal development
Senior QC Analyst (Former Employee) –  Novato, CANovember 19, 2018
Great experience. Though I mainly worked in the Quality Control group, there were many opportunities to collaborate or consult other groups. When you need help with assay and instrument troubleshooting, you could always go to the assay support group or analytical development group for assistance.

Clinical (Current Employee) –  Novato, CAOctober 12, 2018
Very poor management with no qualifications to be in the role. Working over 10 hours a day. It was not a good experience for me, terrible place to work. The salary and benefits were good.

Manufacturing Associate, Protein Purification (Current Employee) –  Novato, CAAugust 24, 2018
BioMarin is a fun place to work. I would recommend this company to anyone interested in a career in manufacturing. The hours may be irregular, but the culture is worth it.

Great Company but little room for growth
Director of Financial Planning and Analysis (Current Employee) –  San Rafael, CAAugust 12, 2018
Great Company but little room for growth. Lots of manual process and not enough technical support to make changes. I enjoy the people there, and very friendly and professional. They all have lots of experience that they freely share so you can learn.

BioMarin is a great place to work with wonderful benefits and many opportunities in the rare disease space. They try hard to retain top talent within the company.

Not what it used to be
Manager, Marketing Operations (Current Employee) –  San Rafael, CAJuly 25, 2018
This once patient centric company is losing its soul. It used to be amazing but it is becoming more corporate, more about the bottom line, and much less about the employee
Pros
great benefits
Cons
give up your life for work

Non-GAAP Profitability leads to no job security
Consultant Clinical Development (Former Employee) –  San Rafael, CAJuly 17, 2018
Company direction is of a “lean” focus on limited budget, headcount, and opportunity for advancement. Leads to high turnover, no innovation, lack of job security, and eventual deterioration of team/department culture.

Good out of college job
Senior Manufacturing Associate (Former Employee) –  Novato, CAJune 20, 2018
Many people apply for this job out of college.
Teaches you good basic GxP principles.
Not much room for lateral movement.
If you want to work in management then there are opportunities. However, the average worker here is not the most driven and you have to individually take it upon yourself to make yourself stand out.

Satisfactory Place to Work
Technical Scientist 1 (Current Employee) –  San Rafael, CAJune 10, 2018
Good science. Some very talented and intelligent people mixed in with unsavory people. Management is a mixed bag. Some departments are good with others quite poor. Recent reorganization in some departments has wrecked good team chemistry and ruined corporate culture. Don't be surprised to catch up on work during the weekends as a multitude of meetings during the week can disrupt the balance between accomplishing tasks in a lab setting.
Overall C/C+
Pros
Good science. Overall most people are great.
Cons
Management and work life balance can be poor.

Pretty Great
Manufacturing Compliance Intern (Former Employee) –  Novato, CAMay 20, 2018
The atmosphere there was pretty awesome and I really enjoyed every aspect of working there. I guess the only complaint that I can think of is that I think they should pay their employees more.

Unnecessarily Complex Environment
Manufacturing (Former Employee) –  Novato, CAApril 26, 2018
Unnecessarily complex environment. Difficult people on many shifts that make the job harder than it has to be. No Quality Associates on the floor which makes the deviation rate astronomical. The deviations are blamed on the employees if they are not machine malfunctions. Operators are held responsible for deviations when there is a clear lack of leadership on the manufacturing floor. High turnover due to lack of training. This company has a "your on your own, responsible for you own training" company has no dedicated trainers on the shifts. Backstabbing is a great way to get ahead. Management sits across the street and has little interaction with employees. Management is clueless in Human Resource issues. No conflict resolution. Easier to fire an employee than solve problems. Shift wars constantly.
Pros
Great medical
Cons
Poor management
