Bournewood is a great place to gain experience as a new social worker but there is no room to grow. Salary is poor and you are often overworked. Once you become independently licensed, you only receive a small raise. Upper management will often scold if something is wrong but does not provide tools/implement policies to provide direction.

Co-workers and nurse managers/supervisors were amazing and supportive of one another. However, the upper management and corporate side of the company left much to be desired and left me quite unhappy from the get-go. I was originally offered $18.00 an hour, this was later bumped down to $17.50. Furthermore, poor management of funds resulted in poor compensation, no Christmas bonuses and high employee dissatisfaction. The work environment can be extremely chaotic and at time violent due to the nature of the patients. While staff are generally great to each other, at time I they can be too rigid with patients and clearly let their own egos get in the way instead of biting their tongues. Lastly, the patients here can extremely emotionally and mentally demanding as it is a psychiatric facility.

This hospital has a very familial environment, creating a wonderful, home-like feeling for staff that trickles down to patients. Ongoing training is very helpful. The camaraderie among coworkers and different departments is amazing, it's something I have not seen elsewhere. Many staff members leave Bournewood and then come back for these reasons. They are also extremely flexible with school schedules. Overall great place to work!
