Peace Officer (Current Employee) - Atwater, CA - July 14, 2023
What is the best part of working at the company? My coworkers and the supportive environment. The ability to be self driven and help the community. The ability to work throughout the state of California. What is the most stressful part about working at the company? Going from 0-100 in a split second, physically and mentally. You have to be able to make on the fly and in the moment (seconds) decisions that can affect the life and safety of a citizen, suspect, partner and or self. What is the work environment and culture like at the company? It's a large diverse family with many lived experience that brings different perspectives to every situation. Supportive coworkers.

The CHP is amazing career choice with an endless amount of opportunities.
CHP Officer - Police Officer (Former Employee) - San Martin, CA - June 27, 2023
What is the best part of working at the company? The CHP offers so much opportunity for different training, a variety of assignments, and advancement. What is the most stressful part about working at the company? Management can be challenging depending on the personality of supervisors and their own ability to work well with others and motivate employees to want to work hard to meet goals of the department. Frankly, many sergeants I worked for should never have been promoted to supervise people. The department seemed not to consider one's ability to work well with others in a team like environment when promoting. They are more focused on an individuals knowledge of policy rather than personality traits. What is the work environment and culture like at the company? Can be very difficult depending on chemistry of command you are working at. There is always a lot of movement within the department with people promoting and/or transferring to other areas and locations. The work chemistry is not always consistent. What is a typical day like for you at the company? Lots of paperwork and attention to detail. Obviously a great deal of contact with the public, which I enjoyed most. Helping tge public in various ways is very rewarding.

Great place to work aside from the pay.
Master Certified Automotive Line Technician (Former Employee) - Templeton, CA - June 17, 2023
What is the best part of working at the company? Specifically speaking about the ASM auto mechanic position. The job was very fulfilling. The officers were very appreciative of my efforts there. I had a much better experience than in 21 years of working at the dealership, because working for the dealer or private industry is a thankless job. CHP was completely different. It was a wonderful experience. I also felt like I was contributing to a good cause unlike for profit automotive repair which seeks mainly to take advantage of the customer. What is the most stressful part about working at the company? It wasn’t stressful in my opinion. What is the work environment and culture like at the company? Very positive culture for the most part. What is a typical day like for you at the company? Repair and maintenance of patrol cars, parts ordering and inventory, clerical work related to the job.

Best job I've ever had.
Motor Carrier Specialist I (Former Employee) - Los Angeles, CA - February 15, 2023
If it weren't for the lack of compensation, I would of remained working for the Department. Motor Carrier Specialists are underpaid compared to Federal Investigators that perform similar tasks.
Pros
Too many to list
Cons
Salary.

Not a place to grow
Office Assistant (Typing) (Former Employee) - Los Angeles, CA - February 6, 2023
My time spent was short due to lack of growth. I personally felt micromanaged as well as picked on for being the most recently hired person at my specific location. Benefits take forever to kick in and you can only choose the cheapest one they force you into. I wouldn't go back to work for them.
Cons
healthcare, low wages, poor management

Great pay and benefits but no work life balance
Officer (Former Employee) - Bakersfield, CA - January 25, 2023
The job provides great pay and benefits but it is very demanding. It invades every facet of your life. From court outside your regular hours to studying reports on your own time. The job is very stressful.

Good pay
Officer (Former Employee) - Southern California - July 21, 2022
I unfortunately retired on job related disability several years ago. Having said that the pension and healthcare benefits that come with the job are like none other that you can get in private sector. Stressful job but has plenty of reward and excitement.
Pros
No day is the same
Cons
Dangerous and tough on mental health

Great place to work and gain experience
Motor Carrier Specialist (Former Employee) - Los Angeles, CA - July 11, 2022
I loved my time with the Highway Patrol (12 years). Management varies by office but as long as you do you job you have nothing to worrie about. Benefits are amazing, the people are amazing and you definitely become family with the people you work with uniform amd non uniform. My only complain is the pay scale if you are not an officer. It is not even close to being competitive to the private sector or other agencies. Other municipalities offer better pay scales especially if you live in a metropolitan area where it isn't cheap. The only reason I left was the pay. I couldn't support a new family on a salary 30% behind industry base pay.
Pros
Benefits and work culture
Cons
Pay

A little hectic but a good place to work
Public Safety Dispatcher (Former Employee) - Vallejo, CA - February 21, 2022
I started in dispatch which is not imo a job for anyone with younger kids due to the hours, schedule changes and mandatory overtime. It's also not good for people who don't perform well under pressure. But all in all, it's a great place to work
Pros
Stable, pay, exciting
Cons
Shift work, management isn't always helpful. Cliques
