Working as a student assistant for California State University East Bay has been a rather interesting experience, and I really like it all things considered.

Nepotism

Workplace culture was terrible. Union Reps and HR are friends so there is no fair representation when you really need it. Fake open door policy and no transparency. People are put in management roles based on their relationships with VPs even though they’re inexperienced, which leads to toxic work environments. Many of the employees are unhappy there but stay for their pensions. They’re underpaid, overworked, favoritism is blatant; overall a miserable experience. Not very many opportunities for upward mobility because because people rarely retire.Very ghetto, would not recommend.

Has its ups and downs

Working as a TA was fine until covid. Teaching labs online is next to impossible. The level of cheating during the pandemic has risen to the point where it makes you feel like you are drowning trying to catch it all.

Pros

Easy work

Cons

Online teaching is garbage

Great company and great benefits

Great place to work with great benefits. The people you work with are real gens and are the reasons you stay. The pay could be better given the size of the University.

Low Pay

My department head was very nice. The campus was beautiful but parking is limited. I did not stay there long enough to comment on a lot of other items.

Student Feedback

I was a very young professor of graduate classes that many students resented. Many of the student surveys were based on personal bias rather than on competent instruction. No guidance was given on how to better related to disgruntled students.

Pros

Love the teaching content

Cons

Biased student surveys

Administrative turnover changed the culture

I worked here for over a decade that spanned extremes of administrative stability and over two years of continuous turnover. This is a great place to work if you enjoy supporting a large, diverse student population in which many full-time students are working one or more jobs. It can be challenging, particularly for faculty, to find affordable housing.

Old culture. .. .old paradigm

Hierachial org structure disempowered employees. Serious need for more leadership training. Lots of dysfunction across departments. Great IT support. Good place for those who are not proactive problem solvers, and want benefits and security without growth

Security. Great benefits

I didn’t interact with students in my department. I was the only person in my office at times, it made me feel lonely. Also, management are always in meetings

Great benefits and good salary, but...

as any state jobs, they provide great benefits and good compensation. There's always so many jobs opening within different departments. However, jobs are not so productive. there are so many people hired to do one job and there's so little work. If you're looking for an energetic and productive workplace, this isn't the right place. If you're just here to do whatever, get paid and use the benefits, you are in the right place.

Pros

benefits, compensation, free time

Cons

boring jobs

Great starter job

Wonderful experince, given many opportunities to cross train in different areas of the department. Management is fair and listens to feedback. I would work here again.

Prepare to struggle if you don't have a PhD.

Lab Instructors work in 70 years old buildings with worn out equipment. Maybe okay for a graduate student, but not for a graduated Instructor. Nothing matters now, all labs are on line. I'm happy that I retired last year. Over 45 years and not a single Chem or Bio lab built or remodeled.

Pros

An office door to close when the jet fighters fly over.

Cons

Office is a concrete box.

Good students unsupported faculty

It was an incredibly high workload, little support to help with contentious students and amazing disrespect from tenure track faculty (Lecturers are treated very poorly)
