Psychiatric patients are hard to deal with. They can be combative and it made for a very unsafe working conditions. You really had to know how out maneuver these patients.
Pros
Good benefits
Cons
Dangerous work environment, traveling across the mountain

Workplace has usual challenges and rewards of working in psychiatric hospital.
RN (Current Employee) –  Catawba, VAApril 26, 2018
I really enjoy working at Catawba Hospital and would recommend to others. The hospital grounds are beautiful. Feels good to help patients who cannot receive care anywhere else due to finances or other things. Recently, more of the patients have substance abuse and mental health issues - this can be hard work. The hardest part of the job is staffing levels that occur when co-workers call in sick or leave early. Staffing here is challenging like it is in all health care. If you want to make extra money, overtime is available, but mandatory overtime is not used. It takes special people to work in mental health and with people who have substance abuse issues - it is definitely not for everyone. Management has made changes in the past few years to listen to staff and make changes. Of course, there are pros and cons with every job, but overall, if you like helping people who are hurting, Catawba is a great place to work.
Pros
Different scheduling options available, great benefits, teamwork
Cons
Staffing resources are challenging, but this is a problem throughout health care.

Food Service Technician 1 (Current Employee) –  Catawba, VAApril 16, 2018
The only good thing about working at catawba is the paid time off and the benefits. You never know when you will get a raise, the atmosphere is horrible, and the management only cares about themselves. The patients are the least of your worries as an employee at that place.

Poor management and nepotism galore
Direct Care Associate (Current Employee) –  Catawba, VAApril 7, 2018
The best part of my job is making a difference with patients. I have some great coworkers who are committed and flexible. Staff are frustrated and morale is at an all-time low. Staff here do not feel supported. The work environment is unsafe for both patients and staff. Management is hardly visible and not supportive. Nepotism is rampid. State benefits are very good but the cons outweigh the pros here.

If you voice your opinion here you could be targeted by management for retaliation. If you're a yes ma'am type person, you shouldn't have any problems. There are many issues here that need to be addressed such as low staff to patient ratios, staff retention, management competency, aging facility, lack of technology, favoritism, accountability, etc.

There is so much potential for this hospital if leadership changed their philosophy....

Worst place to work
CNA - Certified Nursing Assistant (Former Employee) –  VirginiaMarch 31, 2018
Absolutely the worst unsafe place to work, have to many inmates and drug addicts. Work short every day and management could care less, all they preach in orientation is safety but you are not safe there. No one stays they have a bigger turn over than any nursing home that i have ever seen, it is also nasty, and they(management) will let the patients do whatever they want they the ( patients) run the units. Inmates that roam the halls and you have no way to protect your self. They lie so much to get people in the door and when they see how it really is people leave. I woyld NOT recomend this place to anyone not even my enemy. They (management) management uses the benifits a pro but they are not worth dying for.

Great place to work
RN (Current Employee) –  SALEM VAMarch 23, 2018
This is a great place to work. Show up, on time and be nice... the biggest requirements! Have worked in the private sector and the benefits are nowhere close. I love the work, the team approach and the change you can make in patient care. If you desire a caring facillity and the opportunity to make change with great benefits, this is your place. If you desire to work with the acutely mentally ill and provide the therapeutic relationship needed to make a difference, give CH a try. If you desire the wings to think "outside the box" for best solutions and best outcomes, give CH a try. Plenty of opportunity to grow and learn.

If getting out of bed, reporting to work as scheduled and on time and being kind to others is a challenge for you take a pass.
Pros
Great benefits
Cons
People don't come to work, makes it hard on others

Discharge placement back to community is goal for all patients
Staff nurse (Former Employee) –  Catawba, VASeptember 6, 2017
CSBs difficult to work with. (Poor communication)
Need more staff on off tours: Dangerous with staff numbers, Increased risk to staff of injury.
Unit managers need to be more supportive to supervisors. Need to work together to weed out the lazy and troubled staff with no work ethic
Enjoyable part of job is staff supporting each other when numbers were short.
Catawba supervisors went above and beyond to assist staff in keeping jobs and conducted this effort equally for all staff levels.
Pros
Hospital location, good food, great prices for food, Staff supports each other in emergencies
Cons
Staff numbers on off tours

working at Catawba requires you to have no life outside of the workplace. management doesn't work with staff to resolve issues or listen to a complaint. scheduling is a big issue as dayshift members have to work all off shifts but evening/night shift don't have to be able to cover daylight. pay for the work done is far from competitive

Fun place to work in low stress environment.
Maintenance Technician (Current Employee) –  Catawba, VAMay 21, 2017
This low stress job is a really nice place to to settle down and make a career out of your job. Unlike most maintenance jobs, there is no constant stress and generally no absolute emergency situations. The entire staff is generally friendly and I have met quite a few life-long friends in my time here. The direct supervision is the only downfall of the place in my tenure here, as most of the senior staff has a great deal of seniority but that has changed and I feel that my opinion on that will as well.
Pros
Very cheap lunch and breakfast ($2-3), great, friendly staff, beautiful scenery, excellent benefits especially time off
Cons
lacking supervision, old facilities

One of the best jobs I've ever had
Staff (Former Employee) –  Catawba, VANovember 22, 2016
I absolutely loved working at Catawba Hospital! Most of the staff are great and genuinely care about the patients. It can be a very stressful work environment, but your coworkers support you and make it more bearable. There isn't usually a "typical" day when you work in mental health with patients who are in crisis, but there is a structure and schedule that makes the days somewhat predictable. The management are quirky at times, but I believe they really care and I found them approachable and helpful.
Pros
friendly coworkers, state benefits, absolutely beautiful campus, great food
Cons
low pay, high stress

Catawba Hospital
Secretary (Current Employee) –  Catawba, VA 24070August 27, 2016
The co-workers here are awesome. The hospital however is severly understaffed and the hospital is in serious need of repair and updates.
Many of the senior staff is due or past due for retirement which makes it difficult to allow for streamlining processes as they are set in there ways.
There are more patients than can be sincerely attended too.
State benefits are helpful but all salary and benefits below standards compared to the private sector.
Longevity in this environment is tenous at best due to lack of funds to properly run the facility so jobs long term are doubtful.
Pros
Kind, hardworking employees, decent benefit package, beautiful wooded campus
Cons
too much work and too little staff, low wages, outdated facility

Nursing (Former Employee) –  Catawba, VAAugust 17, 2016
Unsafe conditions in an antiquated facility. Poor staffing (RN 1:30, NA 1:15). Facility is completely on paper so charting is written in multiple places (triplicate). Poor leadership, managers are uncaring. Lots of nepotism within the facility. I can't believe they haven't been forced to close.
