Featured review
Caterpillar selected this as a representative reviewI have worked at Caterpillar in Decatur, IL for 18 years. I have achieved growth in my career exceeding my expectations. I have had many great mentors over the years encouraging me along the way. I have found if you are determined, hard working, patient, committed, and willing to challenge yourself, the sky is the limit on your career at Caterpillar. This company definitely promotes within and enables professional development.

Avoid unless you like being a number
Engineering Section Manager (Former Employee) - Decatur, IL - June 5, 2023
Good pay, horrible environment. Union employees get away with murder while the salaried managers are constantly blamed for issues out of their control. Company will over hire managers and then eliminate them without warning.
Pros
Compensation
Cons
Toxic management, work life balance is non-existent.

Productive and fun workplace.
Warehouse Associate (Current Employee) - Champaign, IL - June 1, 2023
Our job is to make sure that we ship out the right part, the right time and to the right place. Learning to verify the correct product through Blue Yonder system. Workplace culture is great. People get along very well. The hardest part of the job is being on your feet all day long. Most enjoyable part of the day is when the shift ended.

Good company, good compensation, bad training for advancements
Purchasing Analyst (Current Employee) - Peoria, IL - May 31, 2023
Been with CAT for 20 years. Stayed this long due to good compensation but work looking to leave mainly due to poor training through when promotions in position. This causes much stress and work life imbalance. Also, after 3 years of remote work they have decided to end it. I understand for some positions in a supply chain role no one notices when I’m in the office. It may be time to find something new.
Pros
Compensation
Cons
No more remote options

Benefits are not up to par..under paying with barely a 1.50 raise within 5 yrs..biggest company in the world and could be a a good retiring job..but not willing to make sure their employees is taken care of or paid correctly …it’s all buisness nothing personal with them..company is more important than employees..sorry but truth..
Pros

Manufacturing Engineer (Former Employee) - Sumter, SC - May 30, 2023
Great team work and daily challenges. Alot of hours, but it pays off in the end. Plenty of opportunities to move with the company if desired. Goals are established and easy to define your success.

Good place to work
Engineer (Current Employee) - Peoria, IL - May 26, 2023
Good place to work for couple of years. Is close to impossible to be promoted on the position. If you want to promote faster you have to jump on a different position.

This job I loved . Ita one of my favorites only thing I didn't like is some management would be scared to correct an bad employee. The work is rewarding the ppl is who you have to watch. Dnt become friends, do your work learn as much as you can and go home. My 1st n 2nd manager I had was sooo cool and allowed me to grow and learn new things. I was able to move up.
Cons
Co workers.

Was a good company until bought out.
Customer Service Representative (Former Employee) - Triadelphia, WV - May 22, 2023
I worked for the company for almost 5 years. We was bought out by Caterpillar and within a year our office was closed and moved 150 miles one way from my home. I was permitted to work from home and occasionally travel to the new location for work. Once that year was up I was told I would have to relocate or look for different work so I left as I couldn’t afford to move. Management with the new company was horrible and made you feel like you’d never belong. I was told many times that certain roles wasn’t their jobs or not their problem.

Good intro to factory work...not a place to build a career
Assembler (Current Employee) - Menominee, MI - May 19, 2023
Coworkers make the job, benefits are decent. It's high stress for little reward, management pushes more and more from the good ones and rewards the bad workers.

Strong name but run by weak personnel!
Paint shop (Former Employee) - Denison, Texas - May 16, 2023
I was not there long due to management, because he was weak willed when it came to getting rid of immature, uneducated and unmotivated employees that got hired somehow. The young people here (19-28) have no concept of work values. That cell phone is all they operate, it seems, when no one is watching. Yet They are the ones getting promoted. How this company stays afloat is beyond me. They were supposed to make 100 units per year, yet they are struggling to see if they can make 70. Go figure! They do not have the right people or enough good ones. They prefer the people with half a brain. So watch out! You have been warned.
Pros
They have a black cat as their mascot on the premises.
Cons
You are nobody unless they offer you a job there.

Work you up to let you down
Warehouse Associate (Current Employee) - Inbound - May 16, 2023
What is the best part of working at the company? Easy work, if you can drive get trained on fork lifts and it’s cake What is the most stressful part about working at the company? In 8 months I was trained on every piece of equipment, they didn’t care. More worried about filling out useless papers on stop to fix our product out of location What is the work environment and culture like at the company? In inbound it’s competitive in a good way. Everyone gets along. Except Tim What is a typical day like for you at the company? Find assignment, get vehicle do safety sheet put parts away or unload trailer
