Love working for this company
Content Manager (Temp) (Current Employee) –  Clifton Park, NYOctober 17, 2018
I was just hired as a temp, but I am really hoping to be hired as a regular employee. I really love working with the team and love that my manager trusts me with that day-to-day, yet still provides great support. I also love the benefits with the company (even as a temp) and am amazed with how much this company has accomplished. I was worried about accepting the job because of the past feedback from former employees...but I am very happy with my decision with choosing Cengage.
Pros
Able to work remotely when needed
Cons
The amount of meetings

Decent Pay just not as much advancement
Picker (Current Employee) –  Independence, KYAugust 15, 2018
Unfortunately I have known people not to get hired on for 8-12 months of being a temp there receiving no benefits. Management is okay but sometimes it seems to be a chaotic atmosphere

Retains that 70 year old publishing company mentality
Marketing (Former Employee) –  Boston, MAAugust 4, 2018
Management has their heads in the clouds - not their technology. At the end of the day management still acts like a publishing company; nearly everyone in management has spent their entire careers working for the same 3 or 4 publishing companies. You can change your name or your product all you want, but if you can't change the mindset of the people running the company then it's all for not.
The product has potential, but I also see the surge in public universities offering online learning a major risk to Cengage future. Ultimately I think online degrees will kill Cengage.
Pros
Decent benefits, reasonable work-live balance, some really great people
Cons
Poor management, salary not competitive in the tech market

Great place for benefits but low pay and annual bonus - not transparent
Inside Sales Representative (Former Employee) –  Independence, KYJuly 27, 2018
This was a great place to work for benefits and schedule flexibility. On site benefits such as mobile screenings, gym membership reimbursements, and fundraisers for colleagues in severe need due to a personal catastrophe. However, the extremely low pay and annual bonus was hard financially. As well, the bonus structure is not transparent, and most years you don't find out your annual goal until about 2 or 3 months before the sales period ends, and when you ask, you're supposed to just accept that. Also, frequent added bonuses, which are marketed to us as "without stipulation", ends up having a stipulation, which gets changed without employee knowledge. Also, there's no way to track the sales that are reported to the company's system. You're supposed to trust that your managers are looking out for your best interest. And when you have an apathetic manger, as I did, that loses credibility and makes it stressful financially.
Pros
Schedule flexibility, progressive benefits and healthcare benefits
Cons
Financial stress due to low pay and questionable sales reports and bonus structures

Decent
Customer Care Representative (Current Employee) –  KYJuly 13, 2018
It is a decent company. I do not understand why they do not pay for experience and dedication and take into account the soaring cost of living. The entry level and experienced employee both deserve much better pay.

Some departments are okay, some are horrible
Content Developer/Project Manager (Current Employee) –  Farmington Hills, MIJune 25, 2018
Some departments have perks, such as Ping Pong tables and gaming areas, but others are miserable places to work. Those departments offer no opportunities for advancement, unless you know the right person, and almost no salary increase. Hours are long and little oversight on management. The stress levels can be overwhelming and there is a constant threat of layoffs.
Pros
limited work at home
Cons
No advancement opportunies, erratic perks

A company that has great benefits. Is trying to keep up with the ever changing publishing industry. Dedicated to bringing the very best content to students.
Pros
They have great benefits
Cons
They outsource IT instead of updating internal systems and training up their staff.

Hired for a Role with no Direction
Software Development Manager (Former Employee) –  San Francisco, CAApril 28, 2018
My time at Cengage was largely spent looking for a job. I was the liaison between "content providers" (PhD Subject Matter Experts with no technical background) and developers that were remote.

From the beginning there were issues with the way the job was defined. Some of the SMEs weren't that interested in doing much innovation or creating a new product for online teaching.

Additionally, I was told to leave the ideas to the "Professors". I was to implement their ideas only - translate them from their golden ideas to some kind of tech specs to give an already overworked development team across the country.

It was a poor fit.
Pros
Salary
Cons
Lack of direction, leadership

Good Entry Level Account Management Position
Sales Consultant/Customer Service (Current Employee) –  Mason, OHJanuary 16, 2018
Good Entry Level Account Management Position, but no upward mobility exists for 80% of the sales force. The commission and bonus plans are unattainable currently. Upper management is out of touch and not afraid to double your previous year goal on a whim. Good work environment as far as coworkers and flexible schedule.
Pros
Flexible work environment
Cons
Pay, commission, too many hands in the cookie jar.

Great benefits but you're stuck
Customer Technical Support (Current Employee) –  Independence, KYJanuary 7, 2018
Cengage reels you in with really great benefits. The hours aren't bad, the time off starting out is awesome and you earn more weeks quickly (by your two year anniversary you have 3 weeks of paid time off a year). The problem is that there isn't a lot of room for advancement, especially in tech support. This group really isn't respected and it's hard to move out of tech support because they are always incredibly understaffed. Rushes (the beginnings of school semesters) are hellish but the rest of the year stays pretty low-key. It's not a dream job but the pros typically outweigh the cons.

The working schedule where your work hours change every 3 months is hard when you have a family. There is not flexibility for someone that has not worked here longer then 3 years to get a schedule that is perm.

All in all this is a good place to work but working at least 58 hours a week you really didn't have much of a home life.
Stock Controller (Former Employee) –  Independence, KYOctober 10, 2017
All and all this was a great place to work. The only downside to it being that you work 58 hours a week you really didn't have much of a home life but if you look at the positive and let you save a lot of money because we didn't have time to spend it
Pros
401K match program
Cons
No home life

Great vacation days and relaxed but poor compensation/bonuses
Inside Sales Representative (Current Employee) –  KentuckyOctober 5, 2017
Although the company has recently granted men great paternity benefits and made their bonuses seemingly attainable and desirable they constantly seem to make changes in order to ensure that bonuses are not fully attained. Switching up responsibilities in order to make sure they do not have to pay people their bonuses. Hiring is based on who they "like" and hardly has anything to do with work ethic and experience. Be aware of the management, they will do anything to save the company from compensating you for your hard work.
Pros
compensation does not match work load
Cons
relaxed during off season

good work-life balance, management needs improvement
Technology Project Manager (Former Employee) –  Boston, MAAugust 12, 2017
good work-life balance;
nice coworkers;
compensation is lower than industry standard and it's hard to get the salary raised.
management needs much improvement, constant reorganization reduces morale.
