Plumber (Current Employee) – Chesapeake, VA – July 9, 2012
Typical day at work depends on if you're doing what's called a "Slab" or a "top-up", a Slab is the foundation of the house before they lay the concrete flooring, you dig through the sand and dirt or whatever is placed in there to lay the plumbing such as sewage and water pipes. A Top-up is the house once it has bare framing around it with the concrete floor. At this point you install the rest of the plumbing through out the entire home including downstairs, upstairs, bathrooms, kitchens, and even gas lines if the house has any gas operated stoves, fireplaces or grills. Usually you work with anywhere from 1 to 2 people per slab/top-up, everybody is friendly and easy to get along with. The hardest part of the job would be dealing with the extreme weather conditions such as heat or cold. The most enjoyable parts of the job are the learning of a trade that will always be useful and of course working out doors on the beautiful days.
