Retail Manager in Chesterfield, MO
on June 3, 2021
As an outsider, this company has a fantastic façade. There is a great appeal to the specimen-sized plant material, park-like set-up, and high-end finishes. There’s a bunch of hard-working, driven individuals who make up the team here that are exceptionally pleasant to work with. However, the overall management of this business from the top is poor. Communication lacks consistently from the owner about company direction and goals. Many team members feel overworked, underappreciated, and as if they're part of a hostile work environment. Turnover is high in any of the positions which directly report to the owner, due to their poor leadership, listening skills, and communication. There's a ton of plant material on-site, but a large portion of it is sold for their in house construction department - and oftentimes not marked accordingly! This makes for an exceptionally confusing and frustrating experience when interacting with retail and wholesale customers. It is difficult to keep the garden center organized and well-merchandised when there are so many competing departments within the company. Additionally, the set-up of the nursery as a whole hinders the ability to care for and maintain optimum plant health. The company is very behind times when it comes to point-of-sale systems, technology use, and electronic systems. Checkout times take longer than they should due to antiquated systems and lack of technology use.The owner and their spouse are not on a united forefront running the company. They have bad communication with each other and it shows in the day-to-day operations. The Assistant Nursery Manager (owner's spouse) is a joy to work with, a straight-shooter personality, who has a clear understanding of what it takes on a daily basis to keep the garden center running. It seems unfortunate that they are stuck being unheard, overworked, and in such a toxic spot. You have very little creative direction over anything here. They will say you do, but the owner will just come behind you and change things without communicating anything to you prior or giving you the clear instructions on what needs to change. This place is a difficult company to stay excited about working for on a long-term basis. Applicant beware!

Overall, there are lots of good people at CVN. The owner tends to micromanage all of the employees which can be frustrating. Nut much room for growth. Downtime in winter.
AP/HR Manager in Chesterfield, MO

I was excited to work for CVN, however, that excitement faded quickly after I was in place and discovered that management has no interest in employee suggestions or moving out of the "paper and pencil" era. The owner seems like a nice person, but he does not do much to make a new employee feel welcomed. There is a definite lack of trust of employees and no feel of pride of work or job ownership.

A typical work day would include setting up and opening the Garden Center each day. Keeping the Garden Center and Greenhouse clean clean and organized. Is a fast paced environment during peak season My manager was awesome and very understanding Hardest part of my job was during the hottest part of the summer and being outside all day The people and crew that I worked with was awesome and made the work day enjoyable. Everyone was always there to keep each other out

Plant care was the number one 'task' at CVN. 80% of the work day was devoted to plant care: watering, feeding, spraying for insects and diseases; pruning. My direct supervisor during my time there was amazing - always willing to teach something new, listen to suggestions and follow through. The most enjoyable part of the job was working outside and learning every day. Some really great people to work with. The most difficult part of the job was it not being year-round.
