Reviews about Pay & Benefits for Teacher in Chicago Public Schools
Cps - mixed bag
Teacher (Current Employee) - Chicago, IL - October 18, 2022
I’m a newer teacher and I love the school I am at as well as the kids. That said - I have massive issues with the way CPS is run. The HR department is absolutely incompetent. Pay for picking up extra classes is often delayed. Nobody goes over the contract with you, so you have to read it all yourself and the fine print is wildly confusing. You ask questions and nobody seems to know what’s going on. As a sub it took me almost 3 months to get onboarded. Secondly - base pay is good while benefits are mid leaning towards terrible. Insurance is very good but what people don’t realize is that the “tier 2” pension is one of the worst hedges you can make ever for any teacher after 2011. To receive retirement benefits you have to work at CPS for 10 years and it takes out 9% per paycheck. On top of that You don’t pay into social security - so if you leave early all the money comes back to with 0 interest. You pretty much need to decide within 2 years whether you’re in it for the long haul or you could potentially goof your retirement up so bad you’re working in a Walmart at the age of 70. Also…a fun kicker is wondering if politicians will simply absolve the pension completely.

Have to be passionate
Teacher (Former Employee) - Chicago, IL - September 21, 2022
In order to enjoy working in cps you really have to be a passionate teacher. Administration and management depends on school and principal but the district in general is fine! Great benefits and good pay in comparison to other districts.

Hardworking staff held back by bureaucracy
Teacher (Former Employee) - Chicago, IL - July 25, 2022
There are many benefits to working within CPS but those are held back by dealing with their lack of reliable HR and support. It’s not terrible but sometimes the pipeline is a slog to work with
