Outreach/Intake Specialist (Former Employee) –  Watertown, NY 13601April 30, 2018
I would not recommend this agency to anyone unless you are absolutely desperate for work. the management does not care about the staff and the supervisors tend to belittle, demean, and treat staff terrible. Management doesn't seem to care how supervisors treat staff and regardless how many times this is brought up, nothing changes. expect to be treated horrible if you work here and overworked until you are about to snap.
Pros
awesome coworkers
Cons
terrible management

Direct Support Professional (Current Employee) –  Watertown, NYMarch 26, 2018
Would've been there for years if administration and director's knew what they were doing! Policies and procedures change daily, weekly.... different for different employees. Have no support past the supervisors. Can never get an exact answer. No job security. Very clicky place to work and if you do your job and you're a good staff... You're not recognized or rewarded. Executive director, Director and HR all lie and and don't care about direct care staff. Very shady, sneaky and corrupt place!!
Pros
Fun job, kids, direct care staff
Cons
Admin, director, can lose your job at anytime, without reason

Great place to work but not meant for everyone
NA (Current Employee) –  Watertown, NYMarch 12, 2018
The Children's Home of Jefferson County is a great place to work. It does amazing things for the community and continues to do more all the time. This was the right move for me, but it isn't for everyone. Your expected to do your part within the agency whether it be working with the kids or working in an office somewhere. If you aren't doing your part then there are consequences for that. Working with the kids can be tough and you have to be prepared for it. It is stressful and can be demanding, but that is the nature of the business. It is just as rewarding for the right people. As with any job, you get what you give and you are treated how you treat others in and out of the agency. There is opportunity within the agency for those who want it and are qualified for it. The benefits are great here compared to what I have experienced elsewhere. The pay is competitive, but does vary depending on the position.

Plenty of Advancement, Stands by Mission
Admin (Current Employee) –  WatertownMarch 12, 2018
The Children's Home of Jefferson County has given me plenty of opportunities for advancement in roles or changing of departments to learn new roles that suit my professional goals and advancements. This organization has helped me pursue my passion for human service and nonprofits. It is an organization that stands by it's mission and each employee works hard to achieve that mission from each department. I started as a part time position and was able to quickly find a full-time opportunity. With any organization you work for there are going to be certain things you do not agree with or believe in but I have found that amount of things to be low for me.
Pros
Great benefits, advancement opportunities

Bullying, targeting and petty drama
Every position (Former Employee) –  NYMarch 7, 2018
The title says it all. Bullying like one is back in high school again, inappropriate language and remarks, targeting of certain employees, unequal treatment among same level employees, and no compensation for higher degrees of education. One is treated worse than a dog. The “benefits” and salary were awful as well.
Pros
Feelings of being youthful and back in high school
Cons
Being surrounded with others that believe they are still in high school

Awesome organization
Residential (Current Employee) –  Watertown, NYMarch 1, 2018
I LOVE my job, but just like any other job, nothing is perfect. Any company/organization is going to have strengths and areas that need improvement. The “perfect” job does not exist unless you live in a utopian society, which ours is not. With that said, CHJC is one of the BEST jobs I have ever had. The benefits are far better than most employers in the area. The pay could be higher, but no one gets into this field to make money; it’s about helping and teaching others and this organization certainly does that. If you are willing to work, have initiative and can take constructive criticism then you will succeed in this job. They expect nothing less than every employer out there; showing up on time, being professional, being respectful, being courteous, DOING your job and showing initiative. I have never had a problem while working here other than Direct Care Staff who are lazy; wanting to sit around all day, not interacting with the youth and getting attitude because they have been called on the carpet for not doing their job. Management has always been great. They not only listen to issues, but they try their best to rectify them. This is a great place to work and I would recommend it to anyone!

Youth Engagement Specialist (Former Employee) –  New York, NYJanuary 19, 2018
This place is great if you don't have a family or a life. The kids aren't bad, but admin doesn't care about direct care staff. Constantly on overtime because people quit all the time.

Awful Management
Direct Care Staff (Former Employee) –  Watertown, NYJanuary 5, 2018
Management is awful and unprofessional. Management degrades employees and the residents they care for. All the agency cares about is money. The agency does not show compassion for their youth like the mission states. They use the youth's disabilities to make jokes.

Direct Care Staff (Former Employee) –  Watertown, NYDecember 7, 2017
The CSDS for the most part are not good at the job, management is the worse and it's a very click place to work. Don't work this company, it will be one of the worse jobs you ever have, and yes it's a job, not a career cause you must likely will not move up.

I enjoy working here but it is not for everyone. To be successful here your schedule should be flexible and not feel intimidated by juvenile offenders.

Mission Driven, Fast Paced, Rewarding
Manager (Current Employee) –  Watertown, NYSeptember 1, 2017
Progressive agency which provides a lot of opportunity for advancement. Hard work and determination pays off. Not a job where you can just collect a paycheck. Excellent benefits and paid time off. If you want a position where working hard is recognized, go to CHJC. The Agency is continuously evolving to meet the needs of the community.
Pros
Benefits, incentives, paid time off package, excellent mission

Love It!
Worker (Current Employee) –  Watertown, NYAugust 25, 2017
What some people don't realize is this is a professional job. Not everything is perfect and not everything runs smooth, every job has hiccups but anything can be resolved. If you do not perform your job to the level you agreed to, you will be watched closely. If you show up ON TIME and perform your job to the best of your ability with out complaining you will have no issues. If you complain behind managements back or bring up problems in an unprofessional manner, they will not take you seriously. I have never had a problem while working here, not even with upper management. This is a great place to work and I would recommend it to anyone!

Great Opportunity
Casework (Current Employee) –  Watertown, NYAugust 23, 2017
Increasingly a better place to work with more and more opportunity. The Children's Home of Jefferson County is a great launching place for professionals who are just starting out and those who are looking for a place to settle.
Work is stressful as with almost all social work/child welfare positions but the supervisors are for the most part supportive.
Pros
Excellent Benefits and Time Off policies
Cons
Unpaid lunch

Site Coordinator (Former Employee) –  Watertown, NYJuly 13, 2017
The most enjoyable part of the job was helping those in need and giving them the tools to live a healthy and productive lifestyle. As a Site Coordinator, I really enjoyed working with the students, teachers, and other educators to ensure a well-structured program.

Catty Mess
Staff (Former Employee) –  Watertown, NYJune 19, 2017
They're small and set in their ways. They provide limited pay and have run of the mill benefits. Advancement opportunities are not there so it is best to try an organization with a little more size.

Horrible management!
Direct Care Staff (Current Employee) –  Watertown, NYMay 31, 2017
Residential campus is very poorly ran it's an unsafe environment for the residents and the staff. Management is way too busy covering themselves and demeaning their staff not making sure the program is ran successfully. It's unorganized from the top and trickles down making it hard for direct care to complete their jobs having a direct negative impact on the residential youth.
Pros
Working with the youth
Cons
Management and direct care staff gets no breaks at all but administration get hour breaks.

Case Planner (Former Employee) –  Canton, NYApril 27, 2017
The other case planners were great but management did not respect the case planner's heavy workload. They were known to throw worker under the bus. Need to show more support.

No effort made to retain employees
Community based services (Former Employee) –  Watertown, NYApril 26, 2017
The company offers no bereavement leave. Not a family friendly time off and or sick time plan. Expect staff to be compassionate and flexible but have no compassion or flexibility with the staff. Make up different rules from employee to employee. The agency does not close in inclement weather when there are travel bans. You are expected to use your own sick time if you have any, not likely since you only earn 1/2 day per month. Staff are expected to use their personal cell phones with no reimbursement. Incompetent management that pretend to care about issues only to do nothing to advocate for their staff. The executuve director makes 206,000 a year and drives a Lexus paid for by the agency and won't provide a livable competitive wage for employees.
Pros
Consumers
Cons
No support or follow through from management
