Family Advocate in Sarasota, FL

Loved working here. Loved interacting with the kids and the bond I formed with fellow coworkers. The communication from upper management to everyone else could be better but you will find out one way or another through your coworkers so it’s not that bad to deal with. The CEO and Vice President are awesome people who truly believe in the mission of the program.

Child welfare is hard work that can quickly lead to burnout if you're not careful. It's difficult at times to persist when you're combatting such longstanding, systemic issues. However, as someone who has been in this field for several years I can tell you your coworkers and management are necessary supports to get through the day to day. Children First, Inc. has not once wavered in its genuine care and support of staff. It's rare to find a work environment that wants you to prioritize boundaries, self-care, and mental health. During my time here I've not only grown as an employee but as a person. I credit a large part of this to my coworkers and the collaborative atmosphere we work in. This job has never been easy but it's work I believe in and am able to do alongside passionate, caring individuals.

It has been so refreshing to join a team that truly wants me to succeed and feel empowered to do my best work! I felt at home from day one and have gotten so much meaningful feedback and guidance along the way. Everyone's input counts at this organization and I always feel completely comfortable communicating my needs, concerns, or interests in further learning. Working in the field of Child Welfare, while incredibly important & rewarding, can sometimes be frustrating & disappointing and requires a lot of self-care, support, encouragement and understanding - It's clear that our CASA team prioritizes this and has worked thoughtfully to create a sustainable environment. I'm amazed everyday by the work that our volunteers do and look forward to being a part of this work for years to come.

No matter how hard you work or how much you do it is never good enough. They smile in your face and tell you you're doing a great job but then gossip so much behind your back. It is a trio team of very judgemental "mean girls" and if you have your own opinions or ideas then you will not be accepted. They are looking for a "yes man", not a hardworking team player. They will talk about you just like they are talking to you about everyone else (including one another). The best part of the job is the wonderful volunteers and assisting them in helping the families they're serving. You will make great connections in the Athens social work realm but do not expect to be in this position more than 6 months (if even that long). The turn over is high for this position because of the CASA management team. The executive director is sweet but afraid to stand her ground against them because the actual program itself is thriving in its numbers, volunteers, and families that are being served.

The mission and values of this agency carry over into the way team members are treated, as well as how clients are treated. Mutual respect, a family first mentality, flexibility, diversity, inclusivity, and a desire to help marginalized populations through excellent mental health services are the hallmarks of this truly special place to work.
