Best work life balance I've ever had. Pay is fair, there is always a way to climb the corporate ladder. Large emphasis on diversity and inclusivity.
Business Support Consultant (Current Employee) - Remote - May 13, 2022
Featured review
Citizens selected this as a representative review*Has many ways to incentivize employee engagement *There are many ways to move up or laterally on the corporate ladder, and internal promotions are typically preferred over outside candidates *The key to success here is how you communicate and how often *Although pay is fair, I found it very tedious or difficult to leverage your talent for a bigger than a "standard corporate raise of 2%" *Embraces remote work or hybrid remote, and work life balance is amazing
Pros
Remote work opportunities, work life balance, many ways to climb the corporate ladder, above average benefits
Cons
Management and corporate structure changes abruptly sometimes, IT team is VERY lean so there are issues with coverage, tedious and even hard to advocate for yourself and your ability

I started my banking career with Citizens and since then have been to a couple different banks. Citizens Culture is definitely one of a kind, awesome place to work!

Great company with room for improvement
Recruiting (Current Employee) - Johnston, RI - September 20, 2023
Company is open to new ideas and suggestions by team. Technology is advancing and the overall org is growing. Growth opportunity is lacking however, the org is trying to promote this

Nice people but it felt like stepping back in time 10+ years.
Operations (Former Employee) - US - September 12, 2023
After coming from a fairly forward thinking companyI felt like I stepped back in time. Citizens could use more process improvement initiatives. Micro managing should not be necessary but is ever present. Pay is low but par for the course for large banks. Benefits are OK but PLEASE tell Express scripts to stop calling every other day - I don't need to "Save" on my $1.20 prescription by spending $5 on gas and 30 minutes time to drive to the "preferred" pharmacy 2 towns over when I can walk to my own pharmacy, save money, reduce my carbon footprint and get exercise. I had a nice team and manager. Operationally it was disappointing (SOPs are helpful/fine/expected but I found this organization to be smothering with red tape). Suggestion: allow people some more breathing room to innovate. There are lots of splashy intranet pages which only a few people had the time to actually read, let alone be engaged or take action (Par for the course for most banks). If your vision of the company is influenced by the slick web pages, your reality will likely be different- it's a big company so YMMV. The environment/culture is inclusive which is great but its actually to the point of being intrusive as I don't need a "bot" to check the wording (for potential offensive language or phrases) of my employee recognition nominations (which are filled with glowing/supportive comments for a team members job well done). I understand the intent but have some faith in people to be considerate. Some layoffs have taken place, while I was not impacted, it did not seem well thought out. Job security -
Pros
Benefits, people, learning opportunities
Cons
behind the times, somewhat low pay, potential for layoffs.

Horrible culture. Pays well but not worth a dime.
Virtual Relationship Manager (Former Employee) - Pittsburgh, PA - August 23, 2023
Entirely too many conference calls, I learned nothing, was given false answers and had no manager yet was expected to meet goals without much training. I was lied to on the interview and hired on the spot which should have been a deep red flag. The only people who stay there are ones who have not worked elsewhere and think the culture is normal. It is not! Management have no direction or knowledge to help and ignore you. It’s a boys club and if you don’t participate in their Monday morning quarterback talk, you are not part of the in group. They have peers select where you work. My overall experience was completely negative and I regret accepting their offer. Complete unprofessionalism. Extremely poor and dismissive management styles. Culture was terrible and negative. No praise. Very widget driven management does not care about the employees. Stay very far away from Business Banking specifically.

None at all

Look else where
small cog (Former Employee) - Johnston, RI - August 15, 2023
Always having system app related issues. Network is always having some type of major issue. Print servers go down often. Poor communication of changes. VPN issues. I.E frequent disconnects or office products disconnecting from the servers. Their call center has bandwidth issues to where people drop connection to their applications mid call, not on calls or any day that ends in y. Other areas have NAC(Network Access Control) where they get no connection at their desk. For a big financial business their backend network infrastructure is poor. Their is a noticible difference in attitude and how you're treated between the "Colleagues" and the lowly contactors they employ.
Pros
They have bathrooms, Walls, windows and roofs.

A decent company to work for. Not the best, not the worse.
Vice President & Dealer Relationship Manager (Former Employee) - Kent County, RI - July 9, 2023
What is the best part of working at the company? The relationship I built throughout the years. What is the most stressful part about working at the company? Upper Management. Banking industry is very unpredictable. What is the work environment and culture like at the company? Regular, not better or worse than any other company I have worked for it. What is a typical day like for you at the company? 8-5 job but sometimes can turn into a 14 hrs.

What happened to the company I loved
Lending (Former Employee) - Remote - June 8, 2023
When I first started Citizens, it was one of the greatest banks I have ever worked for. I thought that I can be working for the company for 30 plus years. This review does not reflect my immediate management that was great. My problems are at the top. I truthfully believe that top level management have no idea which way to take the company. Pulling out of indirect auto lending after years in the business just makes very little sense.
Pros
Good Pay, Great team, treated like family from immediate supervisors
Cons
Not a stable job, Getting too big to soon, upper-level management.

No support from coworkers. Disorganized chaos.
Appraisal Coordinator (Current Employee) - Franklin, TN - April 8, 2023
No one really knows their roles. Not enough training due to the constant turnover. Lots of bickering back and forth and grown adults acting like children, throwing people under the bus. Things change every day and you will get reemed if you miss a step. Management plays things off and don’t take issue’s seriously. Every day you wonder if today bus your day to be let go. No loyalty. No security.
Pros
Remote hybrid
Cons
Traffic to the office

Bank Teller (Current Employee) - El Paso, TX - March 23, 2023
Okay job to work at. Management has their select few they like. Hard to advance to higher paying jobs. Would not recommend overall. You are better off somewhere else
Pros
Lunch
Cons
No advancement

Jobs at Citizens
Absolute Worst Bank I've ever worked
Personal Banker (Former Employee) - Warrington, PA - March 20, 2023
Management only cares about sales. Up to the point they will have you beg people to get products and services through the drive through window. It's a very predatory way to build trust with customers and they do not care about a single customer's needs. Only that they can sell enough HELOCs or credit cards to reach their sales goals. If you only care about really below industry average bonuses that are rigged against you to obtain, this is a wonderful job to work for. Also you will be micromanaged to the degree that if you even get up to use the bathroom you will be questioned by management and will not leave you to build any relationships with customers or coworkers.
Pros
Base pay was alright.
Cons
15 minute breaks only, terrible incentives, no room for growth or development, absolute unhinged management

Decent place to get started in the banking field, but don't expect much
Loan Processor (Former Employee) - Cincinnati, OH - March 18, 2023
They will not train you. You will learn the job 100% on your own, then be expected to perform at the same level as others who have been there for years. Typical corporate culture, cringy, buzzword filled emails and meetings that serve no actual purpose. Be prepared to be forced to work in a dull, grey, depressing office. The job can be completed remote, but the HR and leadership have to justify their existence in some way, so they force you to work in a cubicle so they can monitor you and feel better about themselves.
Pros
weekly pay
Cons
stupid culture, forced to be in office more than needed

Client services
CS Representative (Current Employee) - Rhode Island - March 11, 2023
When I first started in client services there was a good management team. Then things changed and micromanagement became a big part of the team. The toxicity of this team is one I’m not sure how to comment on. There is no flexibility and no communication with employees. They make you feel like you should be a robot. There is no compassion from management.

Worst company to work for! RUN please.
AML Investigator (Former Employee) - Westwood, MA - March 7, 2023
My experience here with Citizens in the AML department was horrible. Management is unprofessional and fake. There is no decent communication and the training is bad. They expect lots of work to be done on a daily basis and do not care how it gets done. The managers all gossip about their staff in-front of colleagues which is very disrespectful and should honestly be reported to HR. Managers aren’t very helpful either, instead they instruct you to read poorly written procedures, ask seasoned investigators for help, and figure the material out on your own. Also there is no promotion, they only promote favorites and when a senior level is open, that’s how you move on-not for recognized hard work. The AML department in particular is poorly run. Salary is horrible too.
Pros
Nothing
Cons
Everything

Overworked & undervalued
Loan Servicing Specialist (Current Employee) - Glen Allen, VA - February 3, 2023
Not the place for intelligent people to work who want to grow. If you want to come in, do repetitious work without activating your brain cells, and not question a single thing, it’s the place for you. The work is inefficient, broken, and flawed. No rhyme or reason, just what they’ve “always done” so just do it. The job has a very “do as you’re told” approach where you carry out daily functions even when they make no sense. You can’t challenge or influence change to a process because the leadership doesn’t listen so you suffer through working with broken processes. Many things you bring to their attention that don’t work are not even acknowledged (not even an email reply). Many process changes are made in a silo without input or consideration from people that actually do the job, or input from leads of adjoining business functions, which causes so many issues for our customers. Business practices are confusing & misleading to the customers which ultimately fall back on the client facing colleague resulting in numerous angry phone calls & emails from customers which we must triage & pacify being the only client facing colleague. We spend a lot of time trying to explain & defend processes to the customer that you haven’t even been trained on or understand. Micromanaging is at its finest & highest level. Example - Senior Manager watches the door for each person who is 7 minutes late & has lower level management send instant message to tell you if you were 7 minutes late and dock your PTO by 15 minutes. This is from a department where you easily work over 40 hours a week to -
Pros
Weekly pay
Cons
Subpar Health Benefits, Poor Leadership, Micromanaging, High stress job, no performance incentives, no flexibility

The Kind Of Office Job That People Fall Into Because They Need To Make Living
Mortgage Servicing Specialist (Former Employee) - Glen Allen, VA - January 29, 2023
Lucked out and had a fantastic manager and great coworkers. Work life balance is good. Very little opportunity for overtime, which is good or bad depending on your circumstances. Work times are reasonably flexible. While working location is hybrid, there is little to no choice in which days. Pay is terrible and never keeps up with inflation or cost of living. Meanwhile, the corporate maintains generous dividends for shareholders. Company claims to be focused on DEI, but mostly feels like empty platitudes. Most employees are just worried about money and unhappy with lack of WFH choice.
Pros
Decent benefits, good middle management, generous PTO
Cons
poor pay, lack of WFH options

Difficult to do job when you had to call the same people every week.
Personal Banker (Former Employee) - Pleasant Valley, NY - November 29, 2022
Difficult to do job when you had to call the same people every week. No real room for growth because they hire upper management from the outside, and pass over employees that have been working there for years.

Executive level mgmt
Sales Manager (Former Employee) - Orland Park, IL - October 20, 2022
Management operates without much vision and creativity. Not employee or customer focused. Average at best financial products, uninspired loan processing and loan product review/underwriting.

Great team, bad working conditions
Teller (Former Employee) - Hyannis, MA - September 14, 2022
While my team was great, the RM would hound us to make numbers (not connections). She would do things like criticize us for helping non-english speakers (very common in the area) reset their app and say they needed to use the phone number or the reset prompts. There were no options other than english though, so we never understood how that was supposed to work. Also, the equipment was so terrible that it actually interfered with performance ability daily. IT dept and Human Resources were not responsive. However, the pay was decent and it had fantastic business hours. My team in-store was wonderful, and I’m still friends with some of my old colleagues today.
