As soon as you receive your CDL you are put to work, and then the will give you a contract shortly after, you receive contract pay and that's when you get your benefits. It took me less than 6 months to get a contract.

There was no formal interview. You fill out the application online and then they run a federal background check/DMV check and then they call you with a date to start your training.

Ive heard some departments do. But within Parks Recreation and Tourism that was looked down on. Upper management didn't have the skills to manage this, they were fearful for good reasons (previous employees taking advantage of the arrangement) and shut down the option. There's plenty of opportunity within the department for this too.
