Fun but not challenging

Indeed Featured review

The most useful review selected by Indeed
City of Hope overall was a great place to work . My office however was located in the bungalows and it was extremely old and ugly definitely wasn’t the best building the inside of city of Hope and the surrounding buildings are way nicer. Wish I was able to be given more opportunities for growth

Amini DAC

1st year was nice but you realize how unstructured it is dealing with 2 other departments can be overwhelming. Old timer staff act like they're still in high school. Management don't care and why they have so much turn overs.

Pros

Free lunch

Cons

Bullies

Excellent job

this is the way to get the foot in the door for healthcare. It is honestly very flexible and even able to attend school if needed . It isn't too much of a stressful job neither and the pay is excellent

Great hospital but overwhelming when understaffed

The hardest part about working here is when where understaffed (which is quite often) but if we were always well staffed, I would easily give it a 5*.

Great stable employment

This job is a great place for a steady paycheck. the company pays well and acknowledges hard work each departments assists with. It was a high stress job, high volume calls employment, but one can find a rhythm quite easily and adapt.

Pros

free lunches from time to time

Cons

lunches seem short

Fast paced environment with lots of room for growth but very little support offered from con workers and management.

What is the best part of working at the company? The wages and benefits were fair. What is the most stressful part about working at the company?Lack of support from management and coworkers. You are expected to be cross trained in several departments in relation to scheduling however you are not always given the information and tools to do that. What is the work environment and culture like at the company?Very click ish. If you are friends or family with management you will be just fine but if not there is definitely preferential treatment going on in some departments. What is a typical day like for you at the company?Busy but that’s a good thing. The thing that makes it difficult is high school type drama going on between coworkers and lack of support from leadership.

Rewarding Care

At the bottom of the food chain, COH is a great place to work, as long as you don’t look up. As healthcare evolves, so do changes to LOS and to some extent quality of care. COH is no exception. The colleagues are great. Middle management does the best with what they got. Great place to work, just expect change, just like you would anywhere else.

Extremely dangerous and demoralizing.

What is the best part of working at the company? All negative. Low pay, incompetent management, poor uniforms, no defensive equipment. No pepper spray, weapon, baton etc. What is the most stressful part about working at the company?Understaffed , incompetent management and no defensive equipment to properly perform the job. Only two vehicles and a golf cart to patrol and respond to emergencies. What is the work environment and culture like at the company? No communication between leadership and officers. Hostile working environment with management. Management has no concern about officer safety as incidents are more of a serious classification now. Management is oblivious to the need for proper staffing, need for protective equipment, need for patrol vehicles, competent supervision, communication devices that function properly, even proper uniforms. What is a typical day like for you at the company?Very stressful. You don’t know if you will be the only patrol officer that day with bad functioning radios and no back up officers.

Crazy schedule

I have worked here for 7 years. I loved it at the beginning, but it gets old quickly. The schedule is all over the place and unpredictable. There are too many pharmacists, and not enough technicians. They are increasing our workload without increasing our staff. The compensation is not great and not competitive compared to other hospitals in the area. My favorite part of the job was learning more about chemo and cancer. That is something that many techs don't really get to see and experience. You do get about 4 weeks of PTO working here, which is why many people stay. It's not that amazing when you can't use it. Then you lose it if you can't use it, it doesn't get paid out. It's a lonely job.

Staff amazing. Management is cold and ruthless

15 yr employee and I watched it turn from an amazing place of employment to a facility run in greed at the expense of its patients and staff! The new chain of management treats staff as all replaceable and at times are downright abusive towards staff verbally. Environment becomes hostile particularly when staff are overloaded and managment makes no effort to really recruit and dont bother to bring in registry and then will discipline staff that are burnt out resulting in a revolving door. Benefits are the most expensive in the country for an employee and unless you get the most expensive one that is a PPO then you will never be treated as a patient should you need it, that’s a big one for staff to be unable to seek staff from the physicians they assist! Raises are minimal and do not keep up with rising inflation! There are unions but they have no strength at this place that people resign instead of going to the union. Entire leadership needs an overhaul! Staff and physicians are amazing and caring and management needs to spend a day with our patients to learn something about compassion and empathy instead of how to ensure they get their bonuses

Pros

Nothing anymore they cut it all from the budget

Cons

Short breaks! Like they time you, because it’s been exhausting, Write ups for everything, even when it’s managements mistake

Great people and mission, poor management

Pros:- Fantastic mission to help patients live healthier lives by eradicating cancer- Diverse workplace with extremely knowledgeable individuals; cross-collaboration strongly encouragedCons:- Not many systems and processes in place to get jobs done- Select leaders do not advocate for their teams ideas, work and well-being.- High turnover rate for leaders. Goals do not end up being clearly stated therefore, they are are not executed

Work environment

I have been with company for 12 years. Great place to work. Good benefit and competitive pay. The management does listen to you and try to make things better

Supportive environment with pretty good management

Job has felt pretty rewarding so far with decent pay. Only minor gripe is that there are sometimes not enough staff to cover positions, but coworkers and management are always willing to lend a hand where it needs to be. I don't feel guilty when I want to go on vacation or take a sick day which is also a big plus. Finally management feels like a breath of fresh air when they don't hover over your neck monitoring your every move. Instead they offer support and are mostly hands off.

It’s ok

Pay is ok. Work is cool. Management is ok. Union is horrible tho. We pay for it out of our check yet we haven’t gotten our union raises yet . Other than that can’t complain

Friendly environment ,un organized organization

Very unorganized internally , all politics , if your department don’t bring money you’re brushed under the rug . Communication throughout the entire organization is horrible . No one knows anything .

Stay Away

Postdocs here are treated like technicians. There are hardly any opportunities to meet other postdocs, network, or have any professional development. Funding is limited.

Great people

This is a great place to work! It feels like working with family. Leadership is great - personable and approachable. Benefits used to be more robust. Medical insurance is not great.
