FIRE ENGINEER ARFF CRASH / RESCUE TECHNICAN (Former Employee) - Santa Barbara, CA - May 2, 2023
Indeed Featured review
The most useful review selected by IndeedGood people and people that you can trust with your life. Always learning something new everyday and continually learning more and more the longer your on the job. Management Well always need to remember where they came from. "The Floor" don't forget where you came from and always remember to have your guys back and make sure they come first. No matter position Management holds. The hardest part of the job is seeing people loose loved ones especially when they go to bed mad with one another. You only LIVE ONCE so make sure at the end of it all day etc...always tell your loved ones that you do love them.
Pros
people love Firefighters they will bend over backward for you.
Cons
B.S. Sometimes living with people as much as we do can be a GOD DAMM Sorority House.

CITY OF SANTA BARBARA insights
What people like
- Fair pay for job
- Feeling of personal appreciation
- Clear sense of purpose
Hard working and grit driven
Water Distribution Operator (Former Employee) - Santa Barbara, CA - October 7, 2022
Best place I've ever worked, miss working there with the crew. Training from the ground up, high expectations. Internally promotion is a big aspect of the city, lots of room for growth. Distribution is hard work and requires alot of grit. Standby and overtime are a regular part of your schedule. The kind of place that makes you regret leaving.

Fun, but insecure
Library security/monitor (Former Employee) - Santa Barbara, CA - August 7, 2022
Central library was a fun place to work security, which I did between 2011 and 2015. Very rarely a boring job, the unending influx of homeless folks kept me busy. Coworkers were nice people, all. My position had no upward track, so no real advancement in the 4 years I spent there. Ultimately beholden to the city attorneys, the library position was eliminated after a physical attack by a homeless man and my kinetic response. A fun place to work, but as with any government job, you can be quickly dismissed and swept under a rug with whichever way the political winds blow. Amongst the higher ups, the taller you stand, more you sway in the wind.

Fire Engineer at Santa Barbara City Fire Dept. (Former Employee) - Santa Barbara, CA - July 19, 2022
Great line of work to be in learned a lot. Encourage anyone to go after a carrier in this type of field. Very hardwork but being able to help people and save them it's the best reward in life.

Great pay and a myriad of different departments to work in
Library Technician (Former Employee) - Santa Barbara, CA - July 8, 2022
Pros: - Great pay and salary to offset living costs in Santa Barbara - Plenty of part-time job opportunities for SBCC and UCSB students, offering flexibility in work scheduling to accommodate class schedules Cons: - Promotional opportunities are nearly non-existent for students outside of part-time jobs. Most promotional job offers and full-time job opportunities are given to graduate degree holders. - The City of Santa Barbara laid off over 400+ employees during the pandemic (the majority of them being part-time city employees, no matter how long they were employed). - No benefits or health insurance offered with part-time jobs. Also, you have to pay for parking by the hour when parking in any of their city parking lots.

Not a fun work environment
Irrigation Specialist/ Horticulturist/ Senior Grounds Maintenance Worker (Former Employee) - Santa Barbara, CA - June 24, 2022
The lack of knowledge in horticulture and poor management at the Parks and Recreation Department has really shown over the past 10 years. More and more is just being contracted out due to poor management. New employees are also getting less retirement benefits and are having to work more years.
Pros
Coworkers
Cons
Management

Well-paid and overall a great experience
Water Meter Reader (Former Employee) - Santa Barbara, CA - October 19, 2020
I was a temporary employee, which means you only get 1000 hours to work for each year. My supervisors were very helpful/had my back and wanted to see me succeed, and other city employees were nice as well. My position wasn't very challenging at all, but that allowed me to go home without stress every day after work. I would recommend working for the City.
Pros
Great pay, everyone was nice
Cons
No ability to extend hours after 1000

productive and fun place
Lot Operator (Former Employee) - Santa Barbara, CA - May 31, 2019
Everyday at downtown parking was busy and interacting with customers. Making sure you know how to handle cash register, pleasing customers and how to operate computer. Involves a lot of communication with not only customers but with co-workers and bosses. Need a lot of patience to work with difficult customers but its always fun interacting with different cultures.
Pros
paid break
Cons
busy

It all depends on who you know...
Streets Maintenance Worker (Former Employee) - Santa Barbara, CA - February 21, 2019
Management is like a group of school age kids that have their little groups of friends or employees that always tell them what they want to hear. Horrible place to work! If you get on their bad side, you are finished!
Pros
Good pay in certain departments.
Cons
Streets department is like kindergarten.....

Easy, laid back working environment
Parking Lot Operator (Former Employee) - Santa Barbara, CA - October 18, 2018
A typical day on the parking lot booth it was pretty laid back when it was slow. Only down fall is that your sitting hours in the booth with nothing to do if you did not bring anything to do. It is a job that anyone can do the only thing I felt it was to easy and no advancement and the hours of job could be afternoon to late at night since they are operating all day.

A great short-term job
lot operator III (Former Employee) - Santa Barbara, CA - August 3, 2018
You learn to deal with many different people. A day can fly by or feel very slow depending on how busy the lot is. It can be hard if you're the type to take things personally, since many people who park are inconsiderate and rude. But again, a good learning experience!

Pros

Cons
