The City needs to value its part-time employees more

Indeed Featured review

I work as a driver for senior programs at the city's community center. I have a great boss who I feel is genuinely interested in my success and development. Everyone at my location is very good at what they do and it feels somewhat like an extended family. Every six months we receive a performance evaluation with the opportunity for a pay increase annually. I feel that I am paid well for what I do. The problem is that since my position is part-time (3/4 of full time hours maximum), I receive absolutely no benefits from the City. I have to pay for my own health insurance, and get no paid time off for holidays, sick days, personal days or vacation time. In the almost two years I have worked for the City, the only time off I've had was when I was out sick with Covid for one week and did not get paid for that time. I am not eligible for any retirement benefits either since I'm part-time, so there is little incentive to stay in the job long-term. I wish the city would restructure its benefits program to give part-time employees a prorated share (based on the hours they work each week) of the benefits that full-time employees receive.

Pros

Free lunches when available, shirts and hats (taxable), good work environment and co-workers

Cons

Little time for lunch on busy days, no benefits of any kind for part-time workers

I miss working at the City of South Jordan! It was such a good experience for me because my managers were able to make accommodations with my disability and use my strengths. If I was having a problem at work, I knew who to talk to and understand me.

Pros

Occasional free lunches, short Fridays, company events, benefits, rewards for safety, and good co-workers

Cons

No benefits for part-time employees, dealing with upset people, long workdays (other than Fridays)

City of South Jordan

Great place to work. Always room for improvement though. New political administration is really moving things forward. Staff is generally very friendly and supportive. Management is good. Great place to serve your community.

Pros

Excellent healthcare and retirement benefits. Pay is increasing.

Cons

Ten hour days may be tough on some people and families.

Great place to work.

I highly recommend working at South Jordan City. The management is excellent and accommodating. The hardest part of the job is dealing with upset residence.
