Civis does an incredible job of bringing in amazing folks on the ground, who are the best I could ever imagine working with. The problems exist at the leadership level. Leadership needs to make a decision about being a software vs. consulting company.

Good place to start your career as a software engineer. There is an imbalance of senior engineers with junior engineers. Clear product direction is also lacking, they've made poor product decisions in the past. It seems like the product direction changes every year, which can get frustrating. Cross-functional teams can be a nightmare. Pay is low, but not terrible. Benefits are okay, WFH policy is somewhat strict.

Company culture is great, especially if you're into progressive politics. Co-workers are easygoing and enjoyable. They're always encouraging others to learn and grow.

The company has an unclear vision and management is an echo chamber with negative attitudes towards it's employees with clear favoritism and class system with favor leaning towards data scientists and forgetting about everyone else.
Pros
The people are awesome
Cons
The company culture from the top is not

Civis is poorly managed, but its heart is in the right place. There were many smart people there, but at the same time, Civis needs to get over itself. It's a data science shop. One of many. The Democratic underpinnings made working there a little more enjoyable, but 90% of the company does not work on political campaigns. They founded a 501-C4, the New Data Project, so that they could do the campaign work unaffiliated with the main company. If you're interested in Democratic politics, maybe look into working there.
Pros
smart and nice people
Cons
pay, immaturity of management

Hours are flexible as long as you get your work done and make it to your standups and meetings. People know each other well and there is a good bond between everyone. Everyone eats lunch at the same table, CEO, HR etc.
Pros
People Approachable
Cons
Perks could be better
