Terrible pay with little advancement in an expensive area
The pay is well below state averages in each field, which doesn't make sense considering how expensive the area around the Laboratory is.

It is next to impossible to receive raises and promotions here, and even when you do get a raise, it is a fraction of what the workers really deserve, keeping your salary well below the average.

Management plays favorites
The Laboratory Animal Resources department of this workplace is a disaster. If you are not liked by certain managers, you can expect to never move up. This place holds a prestigious name that is tainted by favoritism and politics. Personal friends of management are moved up and catered to, while deserving employees are neglected, and are relocated when they speak out against management.

The science done at this laboratory is wonderful, and awe inspiring. It is a shame, however, that all that science relies on the Lab Animal Resources department, in which animals are blatantly neglected, and management turns a blind eye in order not to reprimand personal friends.

Amazing place
This is an amazing little universe, with everything you need right on campus -- even a bar on the water.

Some of the brightest minds in the world are here. They work hard and play hard. The value of the research is beyond words. The pace of the research is astonishing.

I can't imagine a better environment to work.
Pros
Amazing people
Cons
Non-profit research is more a labor of love than money

Don’t expect to advance or good compesation
Favoritism rules and advancement does not exist. In need of new management, the place runs on its prestige and name alone. They dangle the carrot and pick and chose who they want to be in certain positions and not the right person. Lots of turnover for a reason. No clear division of positions no clear anything.
Pros
Benefits
Cons
Favoritism no advancement

beautiful campus and relaxing but productive environment for research
It has a beautiful campus facing the harbor. Generally speaking, it is a basic research oriented academic institute. The environment is collaborative and people are very friendly.

At times challanging and exposed to different technology
Office environment is casual but professional. The work culture is friendly and mostly understanding when issues arise. The hardest part of the job is scheduling time as the researchers work off hours and have a busier schedule. The most enjoyable part is meeting people from all over the country as well as international.
Pros
Benefits and co-workers
Cons
Salary

Student Intern for the summer, good experience but no pay
The CSHL campus is beautiful and on the water. I was a student intern and work in a lab the was testing the effects of estrogen and testosterone on the neural circuits in mice. Pretty laid back attitude at the laboratory. Everyone is very intelligent which was slightly overwhelming at first, but it's the nature of the job.

Great Campus!!
Cold Spring Harbor campus is heaven for scientists, amazing feel to the campus and 'science is in the air' once you step in that campus! The scientists there are excellent, superbly trained and the cream of the crop! Getting a training from there is an amazing life-changing experience. Benefits are great and loved working there. Just wish that the employees were paid better!

GREAT place to work!
I worked in shipping and receiving and to be perfectly honest it kills me to this day that I had to leave. The boss in the department was fantastic and even his boss was very approachable and reasonable. The only reason I left was I needed a job with an opportunity for advancement.
Pros
Everything
Cons
no advancement opportunity in Shipping and receiving dept

Place is straight forward like any other job, just too many eyes watching what you do.
If you need temp job for now its alright. no future. there pay scale in what is expected does not match what you get paid in the work you do . low pay in this day and age, no union.

some mgmt arnt nice people, and take advantage ..

sometimes uncomfortable environment when your always being watched.
Pros
great working hours, some nice hard working people, breaks
Cons
too many list, low pay, no union, benefits are too much, need better retirement, some people arnt too nice

Very organized and everyone who works is a team player.
Most of what I do for CSHL is setting up multiple dining areas for brunches, lunches, and dinners. We serve the scientists, researchers, and other scholars who come in for meetings. We serve about 200-500 people throughout the day so the people who work behind the scenes pull together and make sure they are doing the best they can to make everyone satisfied with their dining experience. The people in the kitchen are putting together trays and dishes non-stop, the servers are responsible for bringing out the food, and the utility personnel are responsible for managing dishes. During these activities management is running around making sure that all the staff are alright and also checks in with all the guests seeing that they are satisfied with their meal. Before we set up these rooms we are able to eat lunch or dinner for free. The only drawback is that sometimes the food is cold or not fully cooked, but for really major events we are served the best food. The only hard part of the day is switching between dining setups throughout the day. Overall this job has treated me very well, there aren't too many things I dislike about working here because this job has helped me to financially get through college and other expenses.
Pros
Free lunches and dinners
Cons
Certain supplies can't be found because they are scattered between all floors.
