You need to know what’s going on in your facilities! You need to ask why your facilities have a such a high turn over rate. Ask yourself, is it safe for the Charge Nurse to also be the Unit Clerk and have patients? You need to ask yourself is it safe for there to be no STNAs on the floor while the nurses including the charge nurse all have a full patient load? Is it safe to have one RT on the floor with 25 patients. Look at the occurrence of rapid responses, codes, falls etc and look at staffing. You will see a correlation, as you will also see with med errors, tasks not completed, orders being missed, lunches not taken etc etc etc. Think about a 12 hour shift, take out a lunch break and two 15 min breaks an your down to 11 hrs, than deduct the amount of time required to chart on every patient, other paper work, taking phone calls from patients families, phone calls to or from doctors etc. With no STNAs, one RT, and the ratio of patients to nurse when understaffed, how much hands on time do you think is left for each patients? I’ll tell you, not much! It’s not safe or fair to the patients, nurses, STNAs or RT. KNOW WHATS GOING ON IN YOUR FACILITIES! Respond or take action with complaints that you have received. Talk to your employees that are on the floor to get a true picture of what is going on in house, not management which will paint a rosy picture for you. Ask yourself why you are having to call and beg former staff that were fired or were prior no call no shows to come back to work with a raise! A slap in the face to current faithful staff members. Ask yourself why long term employees are jumping ship. Ask yourself why your management chooses to use agency staff instead of offering your long term hard working staff crisis pay, which would cost less than paying an agency! It’s insanity! Look at the raises being given,$0.30/ year!!! So in 3 years your staff still hasn’t increased their pay by $1! You have great caring floor staff who were present before the ever changing management that will be there after the current management are gone as well. The floor staff is the backbone of your company and they are treated like dispensable garbage. With out staff to take care of the patients you have no business. If you want to hire and keep good employees pay them what they are worth! Treat them with dignity and respect. Understand that we are human not robots! Know that once you develop a undesirable reputation in the community a viscous cycle has begun. It will make hiring new staff more difficult because they have heard about the working conditions. Now you have a situation on your hands where the facility is consistently short staffed, this in turn leads to sub par care of the patients. Than word gets out in the community about the lack of care patients receive due to staffing issues. The patients know when there isn’t enough staff. It’s pathetic that they have to ask, “ How many patients do you have tonight” or “Do I have an aide tonight” this in turn will deter potential patients from coming to the facility, which will in turn affect your most obvious concern the BOTTOM LINE, I know that catches your attention! Lastly, ask yourself would I put myself or a family member in a facility knowing there wasn’t enough staff day after day after day to provide quality care?
