Weatheriation Program Director in Topeka, KS
on November 13, 2020
I can't speak on on several things about the company as a whole, only on some programs. The programs are run by several directors, who in turn answer to the Executive Director. Each program has different funding and has on different rules. Knowing this, Community Action still tries to apply the same rules to all employees. This works for some things such as insurance and benefits, but things like work schedules and pay don't work if applied unilaterally. Overall, the agency has good points and bad. Management doesn't pay attention to the employees as much as they do their bottom line, which shouldn't be the case in a non-profit. Taking the maximum for Admin funds is okay...if it benefits the employees in the program. Rarely is that done. It used to be a much better place to work. The Bord and Management would do good to remember that the employees and their families aren't involved in politics, nor do they want to be.

Management’s unwillingness to communicate effectively with staff lead to a lot of animosity and ill will. Management’s treatment of staff was impersonal and biased based on friendships and not based on job performances. All employees were not treated fairly and equitably. A very toxic environment, with the highest turn over rate for staff I have ever seen.

Everyone at Community Action was there to do one thing: reduce poverty in the Greater Topeka area. That means that everyone's role in moving mission forward is super valuable to somebody out there receiving services. Nobody had an attitude of not caring, which was refreshing, considering that Community Action also connects government services to people who need them, and frequently that's the attitude you get from government employees. It felt good deep down in my soul to count myself as one of the team.
