Special Education Teacher in United States
on September 29, 2022
As a special education teacher, there is no curriculum to effectively help students with a variety of needs. Teachers are continually expected to "recreate the wheel". There are no resources that offer scope and sequence for the highest need population. The caseloads are extremely high and new students are continually added without concern for numbers. Non-verbal students are grouped with students functioning close to grade-level. Special education teachers often have class sizes that are higher than general education teachers (40+ students in a class). The system is confusing for for families. There is very little training for new teachers. Support from managers is hit and miss with feedback mostly consisting of "do more". I worked with several awesome teachers. Ultimately the unhealthy work/life balance was enough for me to part ways. I was working 12-15 hours a day just to stay afloat. This could be a great option for families and teachers, but the lack of resources and appropriate staffing is depleting as a human.

I loved my job unless I had to speak to or deal with administration. The culture and climate are horrible. Only plus was working with the kids and working from home. Pay is FAR lower than local districts. No pay scale, negotiate if you are offered a position. No union, no oversight-they can say and do whatever they want without repercussions.

It used to be a much better place to work at. I used to love it. The lack of leadership and the increase in power-management at the expense of the staff has turned it into something very different.
Special Education Teacher in Home/Virtual
on September 20, 2022
Overall, I enjoyed my peers at this company. However, in the short time I was employed as a special education teacher for the high school there was a large turnover. Unfortunately, the people who left were the ones largely responsible for the positive culture. With them gone, things became unreasonable and overly complicated (read lots of busy work that achieves little).
