At the Fairport plant specifically, Merit is not the prime metric of contribution or worth comprising the company's assessment of an individual's value. Whatever is, is personal, essential, complicated and is not entirely tied to project's measure of success either.
The Fairport "plant" is very cliquiey. Agressive, relentless soft skills are what will just keep you afloat. It is unlikely you will successfully meneuver yourself into one of the three distinct protected classes where you are generally afforded the flexibility and a common sense backdrop to do your job. With over 15 years of regular first hand exposure, this comes from experience. Good luck, stay strong, be your own advocate and never forget who you are.

You need to know somebody at Corning corporate or at the plant you are applying very well. If not, you probably won't ever get a call. Also be prepared to to a temp (which is an outsider to employees, a mere curiosity) Temps are not respected - neither personally nor in participation.
