Business Manager in Macon, GA
on September 20, 2021
The people at the Macon, Ga market are like family. Even the folks that irritate you on occasion, you can’t help but to love them. The local people are definitely the best part of the job. My Business Manager position calls for long hours at the first ten days of the month but the remaining days are generally pretty flexible. Pay scale is a little below average for the area.

No balance, it's all work all the time. Policy is driven by emotion. No merit reviews, raises not based on merit. Expected to be on call even when on vacation.

Culture of the company has gone downhill. Employees are no longer cared about. C-level executives are in it for themselves and no longer care about the people who actually do the work. C-level "leadership" is lacking in inter and intrapersonal skills and treat business and market managers like they are completely clueless and dumb. Nothing is done to fix the problem at the top level. They say every voice matters, but only if you think and act like them. The company fired long-term employees who helped keep the company afloat during the worst of the pandemic because they chose to be dictators over individual choice. Those employees got no severance or termination pay. It shows how much the company actually cares, which is not at all.Think multiple times before taking a job with this company.

After four years as often the 'top biller' and always in the top two or three, finally had enough 'local management' and left. The company trains newbies so little, the thrust is to keep them in meetings every morning in prime local sales time. The whole corporation sustains itself off Wall Street and it's properties in larger markets that make up for red ink in the smaller ones. As well, there is no staff to speak of as anyone not directly connected to bringing in revenue is let go. In a four or five station cluster (and totally appropriate term) there may be a mere 2 or 3 'on-air' personalities working various pre-recorded "voice tracked" shifts across all the stations. If you want to learn advertising and have an interest in helping clients build their business through intelligent marketing techniques, stay as far away from Cumulus as you can.

Pre-hiring you are told that your first year will be (can be ended early at your discretion) fully salaried. After the first year, you will be commission only. This is not accurate, your first few months are fully salaried, and after that, your salary starts cutting down significantly over the following months. Pre-hiring you are told that you will be fully remote, always. This is not accurate. You will work a set amount of days in the office weekly, and be remote the other days. Management does not care or make changes when these discrepancies are reported. Additionally, there is a large emphasis on "trade" sales, which are UNPAID, under all circumstances. Management ranges from kind and flexible, to disrespectful and cruel, with no forewarning. This includes giving an extra day off, cursing, and yelling at you for thirty minutes. Coworkers are typically very kind, friendly, and helpful.
