Demanding job that is rewarding if you make it your life
Merchandiser (Former Employee) – Mechanicville, NY – December 29, 2014
If you're a morning person, who doesn't mind having a ton of responsibility and a small team of highly critical supervisors looking over your shoulders, this is the perfect job. Start at 6am, and work through a sizeable list of accounts that all expect to see you in the early hours of the morning, Build, fill and rotate several displays in each store. Check the dates on every product you have in every store. Rotate, rotate, rotate! Move product from point A to point B, and then point C until new product arrives, in which case you move that to point A, point B to point C, etc. Make sure the overstock items, which you have little to no control over the quantity of, is organized neatly in a small area of the back room. Handle product that probably should never have been ordered, but was ordered by a salesman who works on commission and just sends as much as he can in order to inflate his paychecks. And, while handling that product, answer countless phone calls from said salesman, criticizing your every move. Take care of a list of 8 - 12 stores each day, that could easily take up to 8 hours of work each, if the job is done properly. When that is over, you have to do paperwork at home, on your own time.
The pay can be somewhat decent after years of sticking with it, The Christmas party used to be very good.
Not a good job if you have a life outside of work or a family you want to spend time with, Decent pay isn't worth a lot of what you have to deal with, Unreasonable early start time could be easily improved by pushing it back just an hour, Not enough merchandisers to cover all the work that is needed to be done, Salesmen are way too pushy and demanding, Deliveries are often late and can mess up your entire day
