The 3 Month Process outlined underneath is pretty accurate. I was incredibly persistent and sent emails to the HR Recruiter every Friday. drove to my Nearest VA Clinic and did my blood tests and them email, faxed, and mailed every piece of paper they needed from me. I got accepted in September and started my career in November.
Persistence is the key. Or Annoyance. Eager Annoyance.
The Veterans Affairs office seems to be always looking for young students trainees, but why aren't they including mature adults who have been laid off and are not getting hired because of their age and playing with the latest software games. What jobs can mature adult do to support the VA because we are out here too? I keep looking but don't see them listed.
I am a 62 year old veteran who did not get hired until age 56. Most of the time, the young trainees are getting the work as interns because they go to school and carry at least 3/4th’s of a full load. From there, it is up to you to get noticed by the brass, usually by showing enthusiasm and taking pride in your job as an intern. This is what I did to get a job. There are other ways such as working as the canteen as this is one of the few jobs that will rate you as a permanent employee. When these entry level jobs are posted, they may have a mountain of people applying. One filter usually used is being a veteran or a permanent employee. There are plenty of employees who work at the va who are not veterans.
How do you get noticed? I'm going o be graduating from college soon, and I already do a lot of the things that are required, how do I make my experience stick out. I know I can do the jobs I'm applying for.
Don't even waste your time working at the VA. Take my advice, I have been there for 23 years and it is getting worse and worse. Do yourself a favor and work for a facility that will treat you like a professional and reward you as such,
