Position Summary:
The Lead Technology Teachers are responsible for the supervision of campers, the implementation of ESF Technology camp’s curriculum, promoting and actively participating in all camp activities (indoor and outdoor), provide a safe and fun learning environment, and serve as a positive role model for campers, support staff and counselors.

Position Objective/Purpose:
We are seeking team members who can teach (one, multiple, or all of) the following technology courses:

  • 3D Design and Printing (with SketchUp and Makerbot)
  • Digital Video Production (with iMovie)
  • Digital Photography & Graphic Design (with Bridge Cameras & Photoshop)
  • Robotics (with Lego Mindstorms)
  • Digital Animation (with Adobe Flash)
  • Minecraft: Game Design (with PC version of Minecraft and Technic platform)
  • Game Design 101 (with Adobe Flash - 2 weeks at Tatnall only)

In addition, we need instructors who can effectively supervise and manage youth. You will be a motivated team member who loves technology, believes deeply in ESF’s mission, and who displays a record of achievement in effective supervision & management of youth, building positive relationships and ensuring the safety and well-being of people of all ages.

Position Timeframe and Locations:

Technology Camp programs runs at 6 different locations (each program is one week in duration). As a Technology Camp Subject Matter Specialist, you will be teaching (one, or multiple) topics and you may also be considered to teach at multiple campsites. Our 2014 schedule is the following:

  • Bronx, NY - At Riverdale Country School
  • July 7 - July 11: Digital Photography & Graphic Design
  • July 14 - July 18: Digital Video Production
  • July 21 - July 25: Digital Animation
  • July 28 - Aug 1: Minecraft: Game Design
  • Aug 4 - Aug 8: Robotics

Essential Job Responsibilities:

  • Inspire campers to think creatively, critically, and innovatively
  • Immerse campers in the Technology Camp
  • Empower campers to explore the world around them and solve real‐life, practical issues that engage their hearts and minds
  • Impart your knowledge and expertise as an instructor, resource and guide while campers navigate the scope of the Technology Camp curricula
  • Lead campers in the learning process through the use of 21st Century skills such as: INNOVATION, CREATIVITY, COMMUNICATION, CRITICAL THINKING, PROBLEM‐SOLVING, ETHICAL DECISION MAKING, COLLABORATION, TEAMWORK, TIME MANAGEMENT, EMPATHY, and LEADERSHIP
  • Implement the camp curriculum and organize/prepare daily lessons plans
  • Create an environment where every camper views him/herself as a vital and critical part of a team
  • Develop “hands-on” approaches where campers can grow and experience their Technology camp first hand
  • Use effective classroom management skills to lead the activity and effectively create a fun environment where everyone feels included
  • Work effectively with fellow team members and collaborate on daily responsibilities
  • Provide oversight and instruction for your classroom teaching aids and support counselors
  • Complete assigned paperwork
  • Serve as a positive role model to campers, teaching aids and counselors
  • Follow the ESF Code, and maintain the ESF Look at all times (all staff wear ESF Camp t-shirts)
  • Exhibit ESF Core Values at all times and to adhere to all company policies

Experience Requirements:

  • Can provide demonstrable knowledge of the subject area(s) in which you will be teaching
  • Have previous experience working with children, examples include but are not limited to; school teacher, academic/athletic tutoring, college/university instructor, camp counselor, youth volunteer, classroom assistant/aid, religious education teacher
  • Have successfully worked in an environment that is typically unsupervised
  • Have the ability, and deep desire, to lead a classroom in a positive and supportive manner.
  • Can manage a small support staff (classroom teaching aid and counselors)
  • Is willing to show us that you are a fun (and energetic) person that loves technology and kids

Education Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree (highly desired - however, we recognize that some subject matter specialists, especially in the arts, and game design, may have alternative educational experiences. In these cases, we recognize that your specialist knowledge may not have been obtained through a traditional liberal arts or engineering college but through other means. In these cases, please provide a detailed description of your specialist knowledge and how it was obtained)

Other Skill Requirements:

  • Outstanding communication skills which include the ability to use clear, concise and grammatically correct written and oral language in all aspects of professional interaction with campers, their families, peers, leadership team and the larger community
  • The ability to quickly troubleshoot, and repair, simple PC/Technology problems and errors. This may include, but is not limited to: setting up and taking down a PC; installing drivers and software updates; replacing batteries; troubleshooting basic networking issues; properly saving files; reinstalling files/programs; setting up video projectors and screens; operating and setting up video game hardware; correctly dismounting USB devices; replacing ink cartridges; fixing paper jams; operating and cleaning 3D printers; etc.
  • Work in a senior position that may require supervising, encouraging and training, support staff (teaching aids and counselors)
  • The ability to consistently remind campers to save their work in iterative stages, and to create multiple backup files of their work. Our mantra is: ‘Save, Save, Save, Save, Save, Save, Save, Save! And now, save again as a new file.”

Reporting Relationships:

  • Reports directly to, and takes direction from, the Technology Director and General Manager (who are typically off site). May also take direction from, and is overall accountable to, the Site Director and/or General Manager.
  • A small staff of instructor aids and counselors may be part of your classroom. While teaching the day-to-day curriculum you will effectively manage your support staff to create the best possible learning environment.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to push/pull, lift and carry a minimum of 35Ibs
  • Endurance to work inside/ outside and be on your feet for 6-8 hours per day, in summer heat and humid conditions
  • In addition to teaching technology topics, you must have the desire and ability to facilitate (organize and referee) outdoor camp activities, such as kickball, capture the flag, etc., for up to 90 minutes per day
  • While not typically, you should have an ability to respond to emergency situations - which may require running (up to 1 mile in some cases) and climbing stairs.
  • Good physical and cognitive condition which enables candidate to execute all responsibilities associated with this position
