Program Clinician (Current Employee) –  Syracuse, NYOctober 13, 2018
Difficult population to work with, but can be rewarding. Large workloads and poor support from upper management. DIfficult to focus on the tasks of my role, due to the residents requiring a great deal of attention, outside of normal therapy sessions. Benefits are good.

Elmcrest is a great place to work, especially the community-based programs like Bridges to Health. The staff are friendly and approachable and the schedule can be very flexible.

Youth Development Professional (Former Employee) –  Syracuse, NYApril 5, 2018
I would not recommend working here. You are told your title is one thing, then just treated as a body when you start working. If your part time you don't matter, even if you have a degree and the full time staff does not. The program supervisors and supervisors are very unwelcoming to new employees and make you feel stupid in the learning process. The only good part of the job was the children. They are unique, hard to handle at times, rewarding and enjoyable.

Elmcrest does not reward performance and you are required to work with some very aggressive and dangerous youth.
Youth and Family Specialist (Current Employee) –  Syracuse, NYApril 2, 2018
Enjoyed working with the residents, but as an employee's you are put in very dangerous situations with some of the more aggressive residents. Pay raises are far and few between and turnover is very great.

Recreation Specialist II and Childcare Worker III (Former Employee) –  Syracuse, NYMarch 26, 2018
If you like working with at-risk youth then Elmcrest is a great place to work. I loved working there and I also had a lot of overtime opportunity. I worked as a recreation aide and childcare worker. Most of the people you work with are supportive and fun to be around. I was there for 5 years and probably should have never left.

Very stressful work place
Family & youth specialist (Former Employee) –  Syracuse, NYFebruary 11, 2018
Horrible staff, Horrible management, Kids will hit you/ spit on you. Horrible work hours and a kid can make up an allegation and you are under investigation by the state for months. Helps you understand different populations quick and be on point at all times. Wouldn’t recommend working here to anybody.
Pros
LSI training, Other cottages support, Relationships with residents
Cons
Pay, working holidays, Stressful & physical environment

High energy fun workplace
Infant and Toddler Teacher (Former Employee) –  Syracuse, NYFebruary 7, 2018
A typical day is welcoming children and families. Setting up for meals, Daily diapering, hand washing ,etc.., Planning and implementing age appropriate activities. The work environment could be stressful at times. Employee turnover rate was high as well as employee call outs. Those contributed to the stressful atmosphere. The most enjoyable part was seeing the children each day, watching the learn and grow. The appreciation from the children and their parents.
Pros
having a fun work environment
Cons
HIgh employee turnover rate. Low pay

Antiquated managment structure
All (Former Employee) –  AllSeptember 25, 2017
Employees are extremely undervalued considering the work tasked to them. Elmcrest will not tell you this, but EXPECT to be assaulted by the kids, whether you work in the cottages or in the developmental disabilities homes. When this happens, DO NOT expect any support or assistance from Elmcrest. THey also make you transport the kids in your own vehicle which is not covered by your insurane if something happened. There is huge turnover and they make you change your schedule without notice all the time.
They have very poor training.

Student Advocate/ Youth Development Professional (Current Employee) –  Syracuse, NYJuly 14, 2017
The staff are typically overqualified and underpaid. The agency does not value a wide spectrum of health (food and activity). Often time CARE principles interfere with accountability of violent and problematic behaviors. However, the job is rewarding and fun with great benefits and paid time off.

they don't train you and then blame you for bad work when it is not your fault. Not great to their employees, and do not care about you as a person. They only want to get money from the state.
