Developer in Minneapolis, MN

My four favorite things are:1) The people. My peers are great to work with and fun and the leadership is really approachable and level-headed.2) The variety. We get to work on a lot of different technologies and different business domains. There's always something to learn on projects.3) The flexibility. Work hours, location, and how we work is all very flexible. This makes for a great work-life balance.4) Emphasis on learning. There are weekly knowledge sharing sessions, dedicated work time to learn new things, and a lot to learn from co-workers within project work.

Emergent Software takes flexibility to the next level. I can work when I want from wherever. I can work less one week and more the next. If I work more than full time, I get paid extra! But the best part about Emergent is the team. The people here are smart, hard working, and truly care about the wellbeing of those they work with and the success of their clients. This is a great place for software engineers and others who want to do consultative software development.

Emergent Software is one of those companies that say they put their employees first and mean it. They set reasonable goals for their employees and are always open to discussion if those goals need to be adjusted or if problems arise during the project. Emergent Software expects a high level of quality when it comes to projects, but provides the resources and training to help employees achieve the high level. Each employee gets 100 hours a year to spend on training and self-development to improve their skill set or stay on top of the latest technologies while on the work clock. There are regular opportunities to connect with other employees and learn from them through lunch and learns and other presentations. Finally, while some consulting firms expect employees to be billing every hour that they can, Emergent recognizes that overworking employees is a fast way to sloppy work and burnout. Therefore, the billable hours goal for each employee is less than 40 hours a week, recognizing that many non-billable activities are just as important to the health and well-being of their employees and the success of the company.

It is refreshing to work on projects that are long-term and stable. It provides opportunity for iterating to truly make the best product for our clients and users, as well as creating a meaningful relationship with our clients. It has been nice having just 1-3 meetings a day, with the rest of your time being on actual deliverable work.

Great culture from the top down. Time is utilized efficiently in that meetings have a purpose. Solid leadership team in place that you can tell truly care about not only the clients but their employees as well. Very talented work force which is nice not having to wonder if others are able to do their jobs. Great work/life balance which allows to be great at what you do but also have life outside of work. Would highly recommend and had known about them for years before coming onboard.

They asked about past experience, questions about my code challenge, and how I would implement more complex problems.

They did a screening call that was focused on your experience so far. Almost like a resume walk-through. Then I did a coding challenge and then met with my future manager and another dev to talk about my technical skills, how I approached the challenge, etc.
