Don't ever have a mindset that any work is beneath you. The best leaders are the ones who don't mind getting their hands dirty, and helping with some of the grit work so production runs smoothly. Shouting is only necessary when someone is jeopardizing their own safety. When speaking to adults approach is key. You can still be firm while being respectful, soft spoken, and taking time to listen. Every package handler should be trained in all areas: smalls, swak, splitting, trailers, and shadow a pH trainer within the first 30 days. There needs to be better mentorship, accountability, and communication all the way around. Respect everyone that has a brain. When meetings take place there should be a person to represent each level of experience starting at entry level. Respect your entry level workers. They are the eyes, ears and backbone of the company. They often notice things before you do.

The shifts at the station that I worked were preload and outbound. Preload is an early AM shift usually 2 or 3 am until done. Outbound was 4pm till done. The shifts are not flexible. If you show up late who is supposed to handle the packages that you are responsible for? If you leave early who is supposed to handle the packages you are responsible for. You asked for a job, you got the job, just do the job.

Very fast paced work. A lot of package handlers quit within hours of their first day. But if you’re a real man it’s fun.
