Micro Managed Workplace with Poor Culture and Management
Lab Analyst (Quality Control) (Former Employee) - Longview, TX - November 15, 2018
Management is the key poor aspect of this job. Management is biased and unresponsive to employee issues. Some employees get to do their job comfortably while others are constantly scrutinized and under intense pressure. Issues brought to managements attention many times goes ignored. Lots of negative workplace gossip among management. These things can create an environment that a focused employee cannot thrive in. Culture here seems to be very focused on finding a "fall guy" for every minute' issue. Favoritism can also be an issue as discipline is not evenly administered. Outside of management the company itself has many great attributes. Great work supplies, informational access and super benefits.
Pros
Up to date machines, easy access to most information
Cons
Gossip based management, Not responsive to issues, biased disclipline

Good Place and People
Laboratory Technician (Former Employee) - Rosemount, MN - November 7, 2018
Coworkers were super friendly and helpful. They looked out for each other and always asked if help was needed. Hours were kind of random. Start times were consistent but hours not necessarily guaranteed. Pay was decent.
Pros
Good coworkers
Cons
Hours can be random

High stress, low sense of accomplishment
Electrical Maintenance Coordinator (Former Employee) - Longview, TX - November 6, 2018
I worked at FHR Longview for 5 years and had 5 different managers. Upper management is very negative. The work itself was not difficult but the management expected perfection and applied pressure at every opportunity which made the stress level very high and contributed to a back-stabbing, CYA way of doing things. I would not go back.
Pros
Compensation was good
Cons
No overtime, poor office conditions, high stress

Unlimited growth potential
Instrumentation Technician (Current Employee) - Rosemount, MN - October 20, 2018
I worked at Flint Hills Resources for nearly 15 years, and felt that the only limiting factor in my advancement was my desire. The company treated its employees well, they have good benefits, and their focus on safety is absolutely necessary.
Pros
Lots of work opportunities
Cons
Long days and TurnArounds

A great starting job with great people, culture is starting to lack honesty and integrity.
Operator (Current Employee) - Beatrice, NE - October 1, 2018
When I first heard about the guiding principles I thought, "Finally a place that understands how to run a business and treat employees right based on the value they create." The problem is even though the upper management preaches MBM culture at every turn, they rarely use these principles when presented the chance.Personally I really like the job and the people I work with, however there are a lot more shady and behind the scenes things going on that make it hard to trust what is said. People are more likely to throw you under the bus to make themselves look better than to just try and improve themselves. The problem is, the people that are doing the throwing seem to be the ones that move up the ladder the quickest. The challenge process is a great concept when used correctly, however is seems that operators input is irrelevant if certain individuals higher up the food chain are the ones who came up with the ideas. Great place to gain experience in the field, good pay and benefits for the area, expected to cover other shifts vacations and call ins. Becoming a very tattle-telling and finger pointing culture.
Pros
Great benefits
Cons
Poor upper managment

Its a good place to work
Plant Operator (Current Employee) - Houston, TX - August 20, 2018
My only issue here is the amount of shutdowns / turnarounds that we have. Which requires working numerous days in a row and is very demanding physically.

Great People, Good culture
Construction Manager (Current Employee) - Corpus Christi, TX - August 12, 2018
Strong emphasis on EHS that goes beyond Industry Standards and oftentimes beyond what is necessary, but results in a safe work environment. For being an privately owned company, decisions and processes are more bureaucratic than would be expected which causes inefficiencies and delays in routine work. The goal for compensation is to find the minimum that they can pay to keep their employees. Overall it is a good place to work.
Pros
Great people, strong safety culture
Cons
Bureaucracy, inefficiencies

Terrible people in management roles
Operation Technician (Current Employee) - Joliet, IL - July 20, 2018
Worst experience ever it’s all about who you know just to get by. The worst people in charge of things. Good enough to gain experience then take them elsewhere.
Pros
Pay and benefits
Cons
Terrible management and Rules

Double standards for employees
Operator (Current Employee) - Camilla, GA - July 16, 2018
Fhr management preaches the guiding principles and importance of values/beliefs but fails to recognize those employs who exemplify the right characteristics. The company has placed more emphasis on what the competition is doing rather than being innovators. The lean approach has caused the company to lose most of its talent. There is a revolving door for employees across the entire company because of a vision that is broken between operations and senior management. Operations personel recognize the gaps/opportunities but their input is often passed up for the ideas of individuals who know very little about the ethanol industry.
Pros
401k matching
Cons
Poor management, work environment, work/life balance

Lots of stress in the role
Customer Service Representative (Former Employee) - The Woodlands, TX - April 26, 2018
The on call duty was to be minimum of seven times a year and ended up being 10+ due to being short handed all the time. There was always someone out of the office so those who came to work carried their work load. With a minimum of sick days unused, I felt that the others took advantage of the sick days on a regular basis.

Excellent refinery to work in
Machinist (Former Employee) - Corpus Christi, TX - April 19, 2018
My career was cut short by a mistake I made by not following a safety procedure. Flints Hills refinery was by far the best job I'd ever had in my 23 years in my field of work. I highly recommend this company, the pay is above average for the area, raises are merit based and fair, but you must follow all safety regulations to the letter, which is an excellent expectations considering the type of environment
Pros
Great pay, excelent schedule, wonderful benefits

Relaxed and lackadaisical
Pipeline Controller (Remote Operations) (Current Employee) - Wichita, KS - January 16, 2018
The Management is very Hypocritical. They would like for you to buy into their MBM Philosophy but will not embrace it personally and apply it in their work. They continue to embrace a Good Ole Boy system and refuse to be Leaders, instead choose to blame their Senior Leaders for the lack of compensation and advancement.
Pros
Relaxed
Cons
Poor Leadership, Compensation is below industry
