Don't bother wasting your time.
Custodian (Former Employee) –  Frederick, MDJuly 15, 2019
Bad management. Very disrespectful. Poor training. No communication between management to team lead and the employees. Management does not respect the employees, they bully them. You receive sick time but it is held against you if you need it and use it. To the point managment threats to termination you. Management does not support family emergencies, management states you are to be at work at "all times." They do not appreciate employees, they are always short staff and hiring.

Wonderful supervisor and co-workers
Library Technician (Current Employee) –  Frederick, MDJune 11, 2019
I could not ask for a better work environment. My co-workers are friendly, helpful, and extremely motivated. If you're looking to make a career switch into the library field, FCPL is an excellent place to begin.

Poor pay and manipulative upper management
School Health Nurse (Former Employee) –  Frederick, MDSeptember 21, 2018
The upper management is so toxic and backwards you will get blamed for things due to seniority. You will get grief if you attempt to use sick leave or take time off. They are very short staffed and their pay is very low. The health insurance is amazing and cheap. They have a very high turnover rate.
Pros
M-F schedule, good health insurance
Cons
2 months/ year without pay, low pay, poor upper management

School health is not a happy place
Health Dept (Former Employee) –  Frederick, MDSeptember 12, 2018
10 month job. That means for 2 months no pay check. Good benefits but you can't take a vacation day or a sick day with out getting a bunch of grief. Some school holidays/vacation days are not paid and snow days are a maybe. Not worth the aggravation from the parents, school staff and health Dept staff.
Pros
Only 10 months of torture

Toxic Immature Atmosphere
Victim Witness Coordinator (Former Employee) –  Frederick County State’s Attorney’s OfficeJuly 8, 2018
Loved the work but the people were toxic. Supervisors were more concerned with socializing and their popularity than anything else. Favoritism was quite apparent and bullying was a daily occurrence. I witnessed many employees being mistreated and disrespected by supervisors on a regular basis. Think high-school mean girls, gossiping and unnecessary drama..., that was the daily environment. It was emotionally taxing and unhealthy. Grown adults should not be conducting themselves in such a manner, but the entire office was riddled with this toxic behavior and culture. Uppermanagment was more than aware, acknowledging those who were constantly partaking in the described behavior, but failed to act in fixing anything. I have never in my adult life dealt with such shocking blatant mistreatment.
I think the county offers decent benefits and paid time off, however the rate of pay was not the best considering the cost of living in this area.

I personally did not have a problem working here, I loved it, but I needed to advance in my career and FGC was limited at times. I would say that I would like to come back if the right opportunity came along.

Poor Organizational Leadership
Department Head (Former Employee) –  Frederick, MDFebruary 4, 2018
The book "The Five Dysfunctions of A Team was written by serving Frederick County DPW. There was an absence of trust, fear of conflict, lack of commitment, avoidance of accountability and inattention to results. Personalities were more important than being a effective and efficient organization. Senior leadership did no appreciate divergent opinions.
Pros
Reporting location
Cons
Organizational politics, Corporate culture, personalities of senior management.

Productive and allows you to take initiative
Chesapeake Conservation Corps Member (Former Employee) –  Frederick, MDDecember 14, 2016
Management allowed you to work without micromanaging and allowed you to take initiative to create your own projects within the constraints of the county and their budget. They provided you with various opportunities to expand your skill set with a variety of different projects. On the other hand, they observed a skill you were good at and encouraged you to focus in on it and work on more projects involving those skills. It's a small workplace, which is nice because you get to know everyone on a more personal level. Everybody that worked there was just so nice and willing to help out wherever needed.

No chance for advancement , and it can be stressful

Lots of hoarding in the buildings you are always cleaning up from the manger bringing junk in

Schedule is never done on time

Some co workers are highly favored

If you can deal with the above , working with the kids is great

Frederick County MD government was what you make of it. The leadership is very much open to suggestions, etc. and that certainly spurred innovative thoughts and ideas.

Once a great place to work. Not now.
Lead Teacher (Former Employee) –  Frederick, MDSeptember 4, 2012
FCG had been the best place in the world to work. When the new BOCC took office, things went downhill fast. There is absolutely no job security, people are constantly worried about losing their jobs.

Skilled Laborer III (Former Employee) –  Frederick County, MDDecember 8, 2011
Frederick County has many great opportunitys and benefits for their employees. Tuition assistance and reimbursment, paid holidays, vacations and excellent medical and dental insurance. There are also ways to move latteral and vertically throught the county in many different fields. Uniforms are provided and they have a contractor pick up the dirty laundry once a week and have them cleaned for you.
