Gelsons is not what it seems
Service Deli Clerk (Former Employee) –  Tarzana, CAJuly 16, 2019
Lack of career advancement
Managers are lazy
Hours suck you will only get part time unless you have been there for 15+years not even some that have been there that long have full time
Always short staffed , they try to overwork you and make you do other role duties which are not in the job discription.
Honestly the people who leave good reviews are either paid or they are bullshitting
Pros
Friendly coworkers

Management, hours, benefits

Office Cashier (Former Employee) –  Carlsbad, CAJuly 7, 2019
Regimented environment. Rules on top of rules. They have their own way of doing things and they aren't going to change them. Even if they are wrong. They break the law and the Union contract and don't seem to care. The hardest part is that they just say we have always done it like this. My mind is blown!
Pros
They do a lot of "gifts" for associates, Gifts cards, lunches, prizes.
Cons
Time off is entirely too difficult to get. Communication and transparency is non existent.

Working at the Service Deli
Service Deli Assistant (Current Employee) –  Encino, CAMay 29, 2019
After the initial training you are sent to your store where little to no further training is given for any other tasks or roles. The management of the department has no direct control of the schedule, time and attendance, or ways to correct employees who are not meeting standards. The store is union which provides a set amount of hours, but also protects employees who keep falling behind and setting everyone else back. Employees call in sick a lot with little to no consequence so those who are there are consistently asked to stay longer or work two roles at once. The department is understaffed and management has shown no signs of hiring.
Pros
guaranteed hours
Cons
work overload, no set schedule, poor management

WGP Service Deli (Current Employee) –  La Costa, CAMay 27, 2019
I dont mind working hard but it is not right for one person to always do the work of others because of managers lack of management. Everything is done by one or two hard workers not fair.

Shop Clerk (Former Employee) –  Sherman Oaks, CAMay 14, 2019
managers feel entitlement
work hours vary on favoritism
don't be late they take it way too personal making you suffer the whole time you are working there you know who you are ;)
Discount 15%
Don't date anyone don't be pretty and must be willing to do the extra mile. People focus too much on others work comparing them. So much chisme there
some people are really cool keep to themselves and get there jobs done and get pay checks others are there to ruin peoples lives because they are not happy with where they are at.
Customers feel entitlement soooooo much and some can be cool too
The food is great!
Prices are way too over priced.
The pay is okay you dont really see a difference with Over time.
Sundays you get paid from 19 and up depending on your over time and what postiton you take. they do drug test so no smoking for 2 weeks.
Pros

Providing a good experience for the customers of the supermarket was enjoyable and rewarding. Keeping the store fluid and organized was another part of this job.

Service Deli Counter (Former Employee) –  Tarzana, CAApril 18, 2019
I have worked at two locations, my mom works at another, and management style varies from store to store. I loved one location I worked at and dreaded the other! The one that I loved felt like a family unit, the one I dreaded had poor collaboration among its employees and management and was very divisive!
Pros
15 percent employee discount and discounted meals. A timeline for raises with fixed rates, so you know what to expect.
Cons
Nepotism. Poor communication. Hard to grow within the company.

Front End Clerk (Former Employee) –  Marina del Rey, CAApril 13, 2019
Job consists of working in the front end of the check stands mainly bagging. Often would be needed to collect carts and return items from the "go back cart" back to the shelves. Would have to maintain paper backs in the check stands if they ever got low. Would often help customers to their cars when needed. Would usually get busy friday - sunday.
Pros
paid weekly, flexible schedule, great environment

management isn't fair

Clerk's Helper (Former Employee) –  Westlake Village, CAMarch 25, 2019
Good pay for a summer/ high school job. Many of the employees are really nice, and it's easy to get caught up in conversation. It gets very boring quickly, though.

Clerk's Helper (Former Employee) –  Sherman Oaks, CAJanuary 14, 2019
I felt very fortunate to work for Gelson's when I did.
Clerk's Helper is a great job for students (both high school and college) and management is usually very helpful in regards to scheduling around school/class hours.
The stores are very stressful around holidays, but that is simply due to high volume of customers.

Floral Manager (Former Employee) –  San Diego, CAJanuary 8, 2019
I was at first excited to be the floral manager for a upscale grocery store. After 6 months or so they began to cut hours and increase the workload on their employees. I started out with floral help for days off and holidays and then no experienced floral help as time went on.

Meat Cutter/Butcher (Current Employee) –  Newport Beach, CADecember 18, 2018
It is a strong company but having very slow growth career-wise. Very few or no funds for learning and development. The people you works with are good. But the company needs to be a lot better with management and handling of the employees.

Customer Service (Deli) (Former Employee) –  Thousand Oaks, CANovember 18, 2018
Company has an excellent training program to prepare its employee for the job. I was taught every aspect of customer service in the deli department. The job was quick paced with a lot of listening skills needed. Accuracy and time management was a great asset. The company was very cultured oriented. The company had a complete understanding that customer service was the first point of contact with the public and took great pride when employees reflected the company positively. I enjoyed working with my fellow peers because they were always willing to help in any situation.
Pros
Satisfaction of helping the customer.
