Productive and fun environment. Nice offices. Many opportunities for extracurricular activities.
Senior Project Designer (Former Employee) –  Houston, TXJuly 25, 2018
Gensler is the dream employer of many commercial designers and architects.

Vendors bend over backwards to work with you/have their products specified.

Professional practice provides perfect learning environment for procedures for running a design-build project. Process is of utmost importance.
Pros
High profile projects. Many vendor lunches provided with required CEU classes free of charge.
Cons
Rather insecure as Gensler frequently waxes and wanes in staffing

Gensler Review
Interior Designer (Former Employee) –  Chicago, ILJune 12, 2018
Gensler was a very innovative place to work with a friendly work enviroment. There was a lot of support for questions and it was very team oriented. The management at Gensler was great - an open door policy type of environment. Teh most enjoyable part of the job was the creative design work.
Pros
Great project work.
Cons
Someitmes very long hours.

Digital Content Consultant (Former Employee) –  Washington City, DCJune 10, 2018
Gensler's core values are respect, commitment and passion. Their spectacular growth and dominance in the field of design and architecture is little surprise when one has the opportunity to work with them.

Small office feel with all the resources of a large (huge) company
Project Architect (Current Employee) –  Baltimore, MDJune 9, 2018
Gensler has made me value the importance of a positive work environment. They promote company culture, but having knowledgable and supportive co-workers makes the biggest difference. There is plenty of room to advance, particularly for those on the technical side. The Baltimore office lost several senior staff to other cities during a relatively recent down turn, but has been built back up and is positioned to grow. Initial pay is on the lower end, but they are generous with annual salary adjustments and semi annual bonuses for high performers.

The stigma is that you will be overworked and underpaid, but that is not an entirely fair assessment for all of the offices. The company is unique in that you are free to look over project revenue plans and will be aware of everyone's billing rate, which makes you very conscience of how your project is performing. There is pressure to keep billing down, but overtime is paid. It is your choice to work additional hours if needed and your responsibility to communicate that to your PM. You should never feel forced to put in time that isn't compensated (unless you volunteer for one of the pro bono projects, but that's another story...)

Overall a very positive work experience. There are plenty of perks you probably won't be used to receiving at other firms. I suppose the one downside is their workplace efficiency and how that will impact your physical work space. Be ready to have minimal desk space and get cozy with your neighbor.

Stay way from this venomous firm
Studio Assistant (Former Employee) –  Oakland, CAJune 2, 2018
Unless you are an actual architect, you are not treated with much respect and usually not spoken to unless they need something. Then, you're their friend.
An atmosphere where bullying, vindictiveness and back stabbing is common place. Management micro manages you and then says you don't make enough decisions by yourself. Bosses that tell you what kind of cleaning supplies to use because almost everything irritates their nose. If the dishwasher doesn't wash the dishes because someone left their coffee in it for 4 days, it's your fault.
If you don't twist the snack containers and separate them, you will be reprimanded because the Adults can't do this for themselves?? See a trend here?
Oh, and being let go but not before you train your replacement.
Pros
Free vendor lunches
Cons
Snotty management

Weak leadership even at the highest levels.
Smoke and mirrors.
Denies issues exist.
Culture is only worth the paper on which it is printed.
Work life balance does not exist.
Egos galore.
Self serving agendas.

Best managed Architectural company in the world
Hospitality Studio Director (Former Employee) –  San Ramon, CAApril 26, 2018
Hired to develop a hospitality studio. Marketing. Leading small team on various hotel and restaurant projects.

Daily staff AM meetings to walk thru staffs tasks and objectives. Review updated work and lead on the progress and design concepts.

Daily Informal discussions with office principle.

Gensler is very strong on self promotion/marketing. So we seek out opportunities via research.

In addition, push to get into national publications and awards.

The working environment is relaxed and open. No private offices, simple computer work stations, and break out sitting areas.

Great People - But Too Much Outsourcing
Strategic Sourcing Specialist (Former Employee) –  San Francisco, CAApril 12, 2018
I love this company's mission and its life saving medicines. The culture is quite collaborative and most of the employees are great folk. Since Hoffman-La Roche took over, however, the funding makes it difficult to pay the contractors well. Also, there is too much outsourcing.
Pros
Great food, collaborative culture, great products
Cons
Not competitive pay and too much outsourcing.

A great company to be part of
Office Administrator; Executive Assistant (Former Employee) –  Seattle, WADecember 6, 2017
Gensler as a whole is well run, and Gensler Seattle is no different. Stable and strong, it ebbs and flows better than most firms. There are many great perks to being part of the company, including it being employee owned. The teams are collaborative, and the leaders listen to the youngest hires. You also get to work in a beautiful office, while working on beautiful offices around the world with your 6000+ coworkers.

Great Place to Work.
Interior Designer (Former Employee) –  San Francisco, CANovember 29, 2017
Gensler is a great place to work but can be difficult to negotiate a competitive salary and advance in your career. There is a lot of due paying and a lack of trust. Depending on who you get in with as your design director and studio manager, Gensler can be the BEST place to work or just Bleh.
