great place to work
Manager (Current Employee) - Foster City, CA - April 17, 2022
Gilead is a good place to start your career here. The training is good. The benefits are great: 401k match, paid time off, ESPP, two weeks shutdown (Christmas and July 4th)

Terrible management
Patent Paralegal (Current Employee) - Foster City, CA - April 7, 2022
Unfortunately management has taken a turn for the worst. Starting from the VP down the lack of support, blatant show of favoritism, the amount of gossip/office politics and deception is really shocking. Number of complaints to HR by multiple people and nothing is done. Others are to afraid to speak up. The environment is mentally and emotionally unhealthy. Staff is reminded they are replaceable and workload is unfairly distributed. Promotions are based on associations to others not by accomplishments.

Fast paced and lean
Sr.Clinical Trial Manager (Former Employee) - Foster City, CA - April 6, 2022
Tend to work in truncated timelines. Always under pressure to deliver. However, very good benefits and culture of innovation. Huge amount of restores too get the job done.

Good benefits especially the ESPP
Finance Manager (Current Employee) - Foster City, CA - February 23, 2022
Working with Gilead for about a year now. You must really know how to obey your bosses in order to receive a promotion. Their annual raise is also small

Job advancements is a huge challenge.
N/A (Former Employee) - Edmonton, AB - January 26, 2022
Job advancements is a huge challenge. The performance ratings are confusing and seniority does not matter. Some managers are great, but most of them do not provide opportunities to grow here. It is good to work here for around 4-5 years, but if one looks to grow faster, they need to look elsewhere.
Pros
most peers are great to work with
Cons
people who focus on work life balance are not promoted

It's alright
Engineer (Former Employee) - Foster City, CA - December 16, 2021
Kinda boring. Secure job, but also easy to get stuck in a dead-end. Decent pay and it's not super difficult, but most of it is definitely tribal knowledge you need to pick up along the way. Tip: stay a contractor, not a FTE unless you like 60 hour work weeks with no overtime (big bonuses and stocks though).
Pros
People are nice Not too hard Job security
Cons
Boring Eats your soul Big Pharma

Fast paced challenging environment
Employee (Current Employee) - Dublin - December 12, 2021
Fast paced environment with lots of opportunities to learn but many internal challenges due to being understaffed and unorganised. Work life balance can be difficult

Great benefits, horrible management
Coordinator (Former Employee) - Santa Monica, CA - October 4, 2021
Working in a large corporation they take care of you in regards to benefits, however management were only looking out for themselves and didn’t really care for other people’s advancement.

Great Place to Work if You Land a Good Manager/Department
Director (Former Employee) - Foster City, CA - August 14, 2021
It takes some time to learn the ropes and build your network, but once you do it can be a supportive and great environment to work. Gilead tries their best to do what is right for their employees and treat them well. I also experienced far less bureaucracy and process burden at Gilead for similar work in other companies.
Pros
Great benefits

Productive and fun workplace
Lab Technician (Former Employee) - La Verne, CA - August 10, 2021
I was a contract lab technician who worked there for 3 months and it was a wonderful experience. The work culture is relaxed and the employees are great to work with. I personally wished that I had more work to do, but other than that I was happy being there.
Pros
Pay, free lunches at times
Cons
none

Great place to work,
VP (Current Employee) - Foster City, CA - July 28, 2021
Great company still going through a lot of change, too much employee turnover, large pharma mindset and culture starting to creep in. No longer has the small biotech feel it once had.

Success and longevity factors required for your job at Gilead
Manager (Former Employee) - Foster City, CA - April 29, 2021
On must be totally obedient, compliant, and do all you can to make your boss/manager look good. Don't get upset but instead even offer to let him or her take all the credit for your accomplishments. Never disagree with him or her in front of others. Never go to the HR to complain about him or her. It could be career arresting if not ending. The only safe time and venue to raise it if you have an issue with your boss or manager is at the company culture required and mandated weekly one on one and face to face meeting. But quickly drop the subject if he or she becomes uncomfortable discussing or denies the existence of your perceived issue. Your annual raise, bonus, and stock option are mostly dependent on how successfully you please him or her and have very little to do with your actual job performance. Liking him or her is much more important than trusting or respecting him or her. Majority of bosses and managers are pretty much autocratic dictators. Promotion is again totally dependent on how much and how often have you pleased him or her and how often you made him or her look good.
Pros
Good benefits, frequent happy hour sessions, decent company subsidized cafeteria for lunch
Cons
Happy boss first/foremost and nothing else really matterss

Decent compensation; Poor management
Sr. Meeting Planner (Former Employee) - Foster City, CA - April 15, 2021
Average work week for an event planner is 45-50 hours a week. Working within the Commercial Operations, there is no advancement opportunities, unless you consider a completely different role in another department. Other departments within CO outpace promoting at a rate of every 18-24 months. If you are hired as a Sr. Event Planner, your best chance for movement into management is outside of the company.
Pros
Bagel Wednesday, Winter and Summer shutdown.
Cons
Poor management, long hours.

Very clean office, spotless everywhere
Consultant (Current Employee) - Foster City, CA - March 11, 2021
Work life balance was great. Appropriate time was giving on assigned tasks. Most of the work assigned were also involving little researching too, so its understandable that the time line was flexible. Our manager was great, and provide adequate time to get high quality work done. Can't say enough good thing about Gilead Sciences. One of the best companies i've worked my entire life. They do have lots of contractors. Unfortunately, my position was not regular full-time, but as a consultant, so not entirely guaranteed.
Pros
N/A as a consultant
Cons
cafeteria is a little walk away, few blocks away from my office.
