High turnover and no room for growth if you’re at the bottom

I worked at GE for over 2 years. The company is very poorly managed by executives. The problem is not that there is no talent, but that there is a huge turnover rate for the executive positions (VP, EVP, and even CEO). Another problem that they have is advancement opportunities for people in the bottom level are nonexistent. They claim to encourage internal growth, but in reality they rather hire people on the outside who have 0 years experience that have degrees pertinent to the job. They do not give people within the company a chance. They also do not offer any incentives to stay with the company. They would only increase my salary but try to always keep it under a certain threshold.

It obviously depends on which office you work in, but my office is probably one of the best groups of people to work with. The work environment is great and my boss is by far one of the best out there. They genuinely care about my progress. It's all fine and dandy until your compensations gets placed on the table. or your boss needs to get your promotion approved by the "higher up's" and then all of a sudden everyone is incredibly busy and nothing ever gets done about it. Honestly, that is my only complaint about this company. They care too much about the profits in their own pocket than the proper payment of their employees. Everything else is great and that's the reason I have stayed this whole time.

Company was a fun place to work (due to the people mostly) but constantly in transformation mode and was unexpectedly laid off.
I liked the technology and they had lots of fun events as well so there was a real sense of pride during the good times.

low stock price meant stability was in jeopardy, needed better cohesiveness in many ways.

Leadership needs work

A few years ago the company was making a change for the better, but over the last 2 years the leadership team has become quite disengaged with the teams that are actually doing the work. The senior leaders and executive leaders are very smart hard working folks, its a pity most of them are in it mainly for their own self worth. A few of them also just seem to be willing to make themselves and their "friends from former companies" happy. The company would be a great place to work if the leadership team got their act together.

Upper management though is really disconnected from the rest of the employees. It seems that people do not work for money according to HR...

Despite the size, has the feel of a small company. It needs major investment and a solidified strategy. Content business has low barriers to entry. Connectivity business is very capital intensive and needs investments in network.

Being a part of an acquisition company creates challenges. The wheels of change move very slowly and a definitive direction isn't always obvious.

As with any start up it takes some time to establish policy and procedures, even if you're a multi million dollar start up.
