A SWE would probably have difficulty leading people and/or projects since most SWEs are heads' down; get it done type of individuals; however, if the SWE is overall gregarious and a natural leader, they will thrive since they have product knowledge.

It is really a difficult task to transit from a software engineer to product manager as it includes lots of commitment towards work, we should undergo multiple tests, group discussions and interviews.
