Far from being "Big 4"

Indeed Featured review

The most useful review selected by Indeed
I would not recommend this place, especially the Rosslyn office. Management is too concerned with their own P/Ls to truly help anyone besides themselves or their immediate teams. Management is never around the office and rarely shows face. Trainings are joke, they never happen and when they do they are useless information. The partners charge time for time not worked then complain to you about overruns to the budget. Utilization is a useless metric that dictates your success and it is something you have absolutely control over. The partners on engagements want you eat hours to make the clients happy but then complain about you not charging enough hours. They are so far from the big 4 its comical in terms of learning and development, prestige, talent and resources. If you want a job were you are expected to teach yourself everything and not have a champion to help you develop, then by all means go here. Oh and the unlimited vacation policy is an absolute joke. You have to fill out this ridiculous form that completely discourages people from taking vacation. The vacation has been approved so far in advance and management pressures you not to take any time off because of the impact to your utilization.

Work life is good, location is great, some smart people

unlimited vacation is a JOKE, 401k is meh, people are incompetent, no training

Good mentors, Growth and development uncertain

People are friendly, seniors are willing to lend a hand.Learning opportunities are disorganized, and there is little guidance available to the general audience on how to specialize.

Great location, people, clients

Great location for the office. Large clients that present plenty of challenges and learning opps. The resources and peers around you are a big help in getting integrated and ready to go

Unorganized. No leadership.

What is the best part of working at the company? The learning experience. Even when seniors dont show motivation when explaining or teaching, you'll get to know different dynamics and functionalities about taxes. What is the most stressful part about working at the company?Seniors and other superiors doesnt seem to care about your experience as a staff member. They lack of time, they are always reunited and can treat you like you are the one to blame. What is the work environment and culture like at the company? Is a very individualistic work environment. Every man for himself. What is a typical day like for you at the company? Most of the days I was waiting for instructions from my senior, who seemed more concerned about getting a promotion inside the firm. When finally he had time for me, he lacked of patience.

Performed analytical procedures to ensure compliance and detect any misstatement, prepared tax computation and financial statements.

What is the best part of working at the company?Opportunity to work with the best and most collaborative team environment. In addition, I gained multiple skill sets cutting across audit, financial reporting, tax, advisory, financial accounting, and data analytics enhanced through inter-departmental learning. Experience in auditing different industries such as fintech, banking & insurance, public sector, and health. What is the most stressful part about working at the company?Long working hours and tight fieldwork budget. During the dreaded busy season, it's no exaggeration that you can work very long hours during this time to ensure that the deadline is met. In most cases, one will not be allowed to take annual leave as work is continuous for a large chunk of the year in order to deliver client expectations. I, however, adapted to the work environment and organized my schedules in such as way that I would deliver at the workplace and create personal time. What is the work environment and culture like at the company? The work culture is most oriented towards delivering quality with much emphasis on professionalism over commercialism. The culture is rooted in integrity, trust, flexibility, and collaboration in order to deliver value. The work environment is fast-paced and a hybrid of traveling to client premises and as well as working from the office examining client files. What is a typical day like for you at the company? The typical day activities would vary depending on the time of the year and the stage of audit of a given client. At the beginning of a new client engagement, -

poor management

Workplace does not invest in employees. Needs management improvement. Benefits are okay. Limited learning opportunities. Wished I had leaned in a different direction instead of staying loyal to the company for so many years.

Fun, Learning and Knowledge

Working in the Accounting Audit was very pleasant, challenging and joyful. Pleasant because I was always doing what I like, which was traveling and accounting auditing. Challenging because always carrying out accounting audits in different clients and with increasing difficulties, requiring more focus and knowledge to complete the work. Happy because I was always with a permanent team where I knew and trusted completely and always with a very good and comfortable environment to work in.

Great learning environment

Definitely learned a lot during my time with the firm. Seniors are there for you if you have questions or are stuck on a problem. I found the firm overall to be encouraging of diversity.

Learning a lot

Work life balance is bad. However you do get to be involved in many different projects. The learning curve is steep and if you can handle the load of work you will be rewarded.

Good learning experience

Working here will keep you busy, but will also serve as an extremely valuable learning experience. I cannot think of anywhere else where you would learn so much in such a short amount of time.

Strong support team

Busy season hours wear you down

Large public accounting firm

Grant Thornton offers a growth environment in which you will continually be learning, however there is constant change and you never quite feel like you fully get your feet on the ground before it is on to something new. The 'work/life balance' is not as great as they try to sell it as. Busy season, as at most public accounting firms, is brutal, and off-peak season is normal 40+ hour weeks. Flexibility comes in the time off - as long as you book it far enough in advance (i.e. there is no limit to time off but only if you hit utilization goals and are unassigned for the period you are requesting off). The managers and partners are very supportive and the culture is one of diversity and inclusion.

Good benefits/pay/stability. Supportive management. Growth opportunities.

Poor work/life balance. Constant change. Draining mentally and physically.

Company culture is great, it helps balance out the poor pay and lack of directional growth and development. Overall, good experience for someone learning about a role but absolutley not the route if you are not in Audit, Tax, Advisory services.
