Have the employees provide feedback on the CEO's management directly to the Board as part of an confidential engagement survey. Part of the CEO's job evaluation and compensation should be directly connected to employee engagement.

I used to be incredibly proud to tell people where I worked, and got many responses such as "God bless you" and "You're doing God's work". However, when the new CEO was appointed the tone of the organization changed and I no longer felt the enthusiasm that I once did. Eventually in my last year with Guiding Eyes I became ashamed to say where I worked because I knew that the organization's public persona was very different from how it treated its employees.

Very helpful to have connections within the organization since it's very small. HR Dept. is one person but she provides excellent support to both employees and management.
