About us

We continue to develop and strengthen our instructional program. The High School will be participating in a grant-funded program sponsored by the Massachusetts Math and Science Initiative. The program aims to expand enrollments in Advanced Placement courses and to raise the achievement levels of students in these courses.

The Middle School will provide

The Middle School will also introduce an Accelerated Mathematics curriculum for students in Grades 6 and 7. The Chinese program that was begun a year ago will be extended into Grade 7 this year, so that students who began the study of Chinese in Grade 6 last year will be able to continue that program.

Elementary school teachers at Plains and Mosier schools will receive training in the Lucy Calkins Writing Program, a program which stems from Columbia University. A year ago several teachers and administrators participated in training in this program in New York. This year program staff will come from New York to South Hadley to work with our staff in implementation of the program.

Finally, the Elementary School Building Committee's work has progressed to the point where it can seek funding from Town Meeting to hire an architect. The architect will conduct a feasibility study for a project to either replace Plains School with a new building or carry out major renovations at the school. The Building Committee believes that the best solution will be to construct a new Plains School, but that decision will have to be made in conjunction with the Massachusetts School Building Authority and with the ultimate approval of Town Meeting.

We wish everyone a happy and productive school year!
