Commercial Equipment Breakdown Adjuster (Former Employee) –  RemoteSeptember 16, 2019
I am an EB adjuster and I am verbally abused weekly by my manager and their boss. I am told how awful of an adjuster I am and that I am doing a terrible job. I’m an experienced and thorough adjuster and I have never been told how “terrible” I am. Management is condescending and pompous. They don’t care about you as a person, they just care that you close claims. I can never use any PTO for time off for doctor appointments or even being sick. My claim count is through the roof and I put in 12 hour days and it’s never good enough. Don’t take a job in Equipment Breakdown. There is no training, prepare to be verbally abused by your boss, don’t think about using any PTO and just know what you do will never be enough.
Don’t work here.

Great place to work, Happy employee's. Handling the CC's can be a bit of a challenge but just keep them informed and you'll do fine. Summertime can be busy.

Spike Project Manager (Former Employee) –  Atlanta, GAJune 14, 2019
HSB was a great company to work for at a time. Big changes in processes have made the job clunky and confusing. I excelled at this job for many years but with these new changes the job feels nearly impossible.

Customer Service
Customer Solutions Center Representative (Former Employee) –  Wayne, PAMay 27, 2019
The company as a whole is a good company. Customer Service is the meat of the company and if the employees are happy then the customers are happy and its a great place to work. There is a supervisor there that is destroying that department. A supervisor is one that supports the team, takes up for the team etc. You can only humble yourself for so long until you realize your worth and no pay is enough if your totally unhappy. Get rid of that supervisor and i promise the customer service department will be A1
Pros
The company as a whole is good
Cons
Need a new supervisor in the customer service department

Lowest salary in the industry
Boiler Inspector (Former Employee) –  Jonesboro, ARApril 15, 2019
They have the lowest salary in the industry and likely the least amount of respect from the other companies in the industry. They do not use the same databases as the other companies which causes problems in the industry.

Working here was amazing. Everyone supported each other, received raises and performance bonuses. Only problem was little room to grow into supervisory positions.
Pros
Generous salary and benefits, understanding of busy, single parents.
Cons
No room for career growth.

Underwriting Assistant (Current Employee) –  Wayne, PAMarch 25, 2019
Only benefit to this company is they give you a lot of PTO, probably because they know everyone hates their job. A lot of mandatory OT weeks but then continuously state the department is fully staffed. Absolutely nowhere to move up, no career procurement for younger employees also.
Pros
Pto
Cons
salary, they give no skills to move forward in your career

Boiler And Machinery General Adjuster (Former Employee) –  Houston, TXMarch 21, 2019
HSB truly values experience and skill sets over age of their personnel. They are an icon in the insurance industry and have a wealth of industry knowledge. Merit increases and bonuses are lower than the industry standard which is surprising given the company's combined ratio and profit margin.
Pros
Respecting and retaining older employees for their knowledge and expertise
Cons
Merit increases and bonuses are below industry standards

Good place to work for but not for advancement. Annual raises are good, but they take a long time to give promotions, even if the promotions was guaranteed.

A good place to be
Authorized Inspector (Former Employee) –  Hartford, CTMay 10, 2018
HSB was a great place to work and the rewards are very good. You must know that you will at times be dealing with degreed engineers that think they are right and you know nothing, you have the code and they must follow it so you have to be able to stand your ground, but only if you know they are wrong.
Pros
pay, pride, a good job
Cons
travel at last minute, arguments.

Challenging work environment
Authorized Nuclear Inspector (Former Employee) –  RemoteMarch 28, 2018
Working in a Nuclear Power Plant was the most interesting part as an Inspector. It is one of the most secured places on earth. What I am not pleased is my role as Authorized Nuclear In-Service Inspector was under appreciated by the clients and probably one of the lowest paid worker on site for the bulk of responsibilities. It is a position that oversees multiple programs and engaging with the respective leadership on a daily basis.
Pros
Keeps you engaged all the time.

Lack of consistency
Underwriting Assistant (Current Employee) –  Wayne, PAMarch 27, 2018
A company that has been around for 150 years should have a more consistent process in place for training and job advancement. It was a good place to work (Relaxing, good people), but a real lack of leadership
Pros
Relaxing work enviroment
Cons
Awful training
