Great place to make a difference
Youth Enrichment Program Operations Supervisor (Former Employee) –  Hayward, CAApril 18, 2019
Great place to start a career working with youth. If you have a passion that out weighs politics, this is a good place to be. Regular evaluations, professional development and relevant curriculum. Management can be tough on you but that's their job. Amazing supervisors and even better students and community. If you really want to impact the life of youth, this is the place to do it.
Pros
Profesional development and advancements
Cons
No paid vacation for 10 month employees

Excellent pay and potential benefits
Custodian/Janitor (Former Employee) –  Hayward, CAFebruary 26, 2019
The pay and potential benefits for retirement for Calpers along with the paid days off are about the only aspects of the job I can honestly say are the highlights. However, the management is on the extreme opposite end of the spectrum. Very poor cutthroat culture and poor managers who do not seem to have an idea even about your job tasks. The hardest part of the job is looking over your shoulder to make sure a co-worker isn't there to try to bring you down so they can get a "promotion" or a permanent school site to work at. You move from site to site cleaning kitchen areas and most of the time you may get home as late as 8 or 9 pm. Lastly, If you do wind up laid off or terminated from this district you may as well consider yourself permanently banned. They have a policy of NOT ever hiring previous employees regardless of the condition which is borderline illegal.
Pros
pay and potential benefits for retirement for Calpers along with the paid days off
Cons
Paid once a month, cutthroat culture, poor management, dreadful HR

My Job
Physical Education Teacher (Former Employee) –  Hayward, CAJune 28, 2018
1. First 1.25 hours prep/break/no classes-ELD instruction for GE teachers.
2. Picked up first class at 9:15am
3. School wide recess
4. Taught two classes, then lunch
5. Taught two more classes, then end of day

Management: objective, fair, even when you disagreed, so I liked that, and often times got what was requested if it was within reason.

Culture: Overall, decent, professional, I stayed away from the problems and was in a different role.

What I learned: a lot about myself and students, and communication skills, etc....

Enjoyable part of job: seeing and working with the students.

Hardest part: behavior (at times, it wasn't a school wide issue).
Pros
schedule
Cons
not very many, a few challenging students

YEP Program Leader
Yep Program Leader (Current Employee) –  Hayward, CAApril 4, 2018
Hours are never increased but pay is good. Seems like they do not want to pay benefits which is why they do not give more hours. Management at site really just depends on your locations. Some locations have better support than where I was located.

Challenging and rewarding work environment
Teacher (Former Employee) –  Hayward, CADecember 31, 2017
The opportunity to affect children's lives was both a challenge with the reward of seeing progress.
Collaboration with other teachers provided excellent opportunity to improve knowledge and skill.
The requirement of developing lesson plans within the guidelines of district curriculum provided an opportunity to use creative talents.
Over-all, personality management more than classroom management was the skill most needed. I was successful in assessing a students' area of concentration and build from there.

Not a good long term solution
Outreach Worker (Former Employee) –  Hayward high SchoolSeptember 26, 2017
Long-term stability is not in the offing. POC do not fare well in this district. Management is in a death spiral against the Board, which is against the Unions. Children are terribly misguided and suffer under racist conditions that persist. 2014 saw race riots in the district, but the management insisted there is no race problem. A student was gunned down (assailant at large), and the district is in denial that there is a gang problem. (Thumbs down)

The staff is cold and standoffish to new hires. The administration acts like a revolving door, which made for an unstable work environment.

Child Nutrition is a gratifying experience
Kitchen Operator (Current Employee) –  Hayward, CAAugust 9, 2016
In food services, each kitchen is managed by a kitchen operator and if meal counts demand, a nutrition assistant.
Each kitchen operator and nutrition assistant is overseen by a field supervisor. Supervisors are overseen by a Manager and Director.
The management has changed a little but all together is very consistent with their standards and expectations. As long as you are doing what is expected and follow procedures while being punctual and effective in your kitchen, management will not have a problem with you. Management is very good at paying attention to those who work hard and give their best at everything expected. Recognition does not fall short in this district.
I have had the pleasure of being with the district for more than 5 school seasons.
Most employees in food services are enjoyable to work with and are very comfortable in their surroundings, always willing to help.
The hardest part of the job is that you can never make everyone happy all the time. There are times when people are just not happy no matter what you do.
The most enjoyable part is to see the ones you are truly there for smile, the children and the teachers who recognize and take the time to understand what you do and who it's all about.
Pros
Food tasting, children interaction, serving the community, room for advancement, job security
Cons

Poorly Incompetent and Untrained Leadership
School Principal (Current Employee) –  Hayward, CADecember 1, 2015
The admin staff at district does not have enough experience and superintendent does not have any education credentials. A perfect storm that never goes away in this school district. As many teachers and parents have said the school board does not have the majority to change it and get rid of unqualified personnel. It is a crony political hiring place.
Pros
Next to Major highways and BART
Cons
Poorly trained and incompetent leadership

Not bad if you can handle stress
Faculty (Current Employee) –  Hayward CaAugust 7, 2014
If you can easily deal with gossip, drama and inefficientcy then this work environment wont get to you. The pay is decent, has job security with the district, retirement, and some other perks time and again. Most of the time the kids are behaved and each day goes by smoothly. From my experience, the places for improvement are the management handling of and individual personalities who like creating and stirring drama. Things could be more streamlined and efficient if more action was taken over coddling to the few who create stress.
Pros
job security and perks
Cons
inefficient management overall, drama and stress vs pay.

Hayward is a Good Place to Be
3 Grade Teacher (Current Employee) –  Hayward, CAJune 3, 2014
I have terrific management and fantastic colleagues who inspire me daily. A typical day at work is often not typical because I'm working with people and each of them are individuals so from one day to the next their needs and moods change. The end goal is the same however, to have learned successfully in a safe atmosphere and carried out a functional workflow system to facilitate this. Additionally, behavior management comes greatly into play here because there is often much mediation involved during the day. Kids need to be kept interested and involved in every lesson to be their most productive selves and this goes hand and hand with choosing the best actions when it comes to behavior a lot of the time. The hardest part of the job is watching a child go through pain from their home life; the best part of the job is being there for them and wearing the hat of therapist, social worker, human resources director, or whatever the moment may entail to best assist them through a rough spot so that they may walk through it and come out feeling secure.

The position regarded education and growth. I met that challenge.
School Bus Driver (Former Employee) –  Hayward, CAJuly 30, 2012
Hayward Unified School District was a wonderful experience. The Training department and staff were all professionals. Typical day at work: Pick-up and dropping students at their perspective schools safely and in a timely manner. I learned safety precautions from Highway Patrol. Management were all capable and positive. My hardest part of the job was ensuring safety measures were adhered to in on and around the vehicle. The most enjoyable part of my job: I worked independently; driving my own bus daily. I received excellent benefits and salary
Pros
excellent in-town schedule
Cons
weekly cleaning of your vehicle
