Illogical decisions made by nepotism placed managers completely under qualified and figuring things out by trial. There is a strong sense of innovation, but sometimes for innovation sake (inventing the wheel). Although improving, disrespect is often tolerated or even provided by management.

Awful management

I can’t stress this enough DO NOT WORK HERE!!! There is no advancement here whatsoever! Your work/life balance will make you miserable! I quit and within a week I felt better in every single part of my life!For the most part your coworkers are very cool there’s a handful that will throw you under the bus as soon as the opportunity presents itself. Management is far and away the biggest issue they will run good workers out the door if they simply do not like them. If you have an opinion they don’t agree with just sign your walking papers right there. I have worked a fair amount of jobs in my life and I can honestly tell you that this is THE WORST JOB I HAVE EVER HAD!

Would not recommend

Micromanagement is rampant. Creativity is stifled and no flexibility is granted to engineers.Untrained managers are more interested in maintaining status quo. Subordinates are offered no growth opportunities. Passive-aggressive retaliation for any form of feedback is rampant across departments. there is no real way for upstream feedback.Compensation is a joke. There is no real raise nor bonus while company is making massive profits.Management has no interest in retaining talent, they'd rather hire fresh grads for cheap, overwork and wait until they quit.Very traditional outlook on work-life balance and employees are kept on a short leash. Prefers the stick approach to getting things done.

Work/Life Balance Not Good

I joined this private company a few years ago (corporate side not manufacturing). Company is too big to operate at this small of a size efficiently. Lean team size results in unpaid overtime/delays in all processes, expectations are high and uncompromising. Taking PTO just means you will be making up that time later. Micro-management at the executive level stifles work and their approach is very strict/old school in terms of the current corporate landscape. Nepotism & favorites within the ranks are clear. Co-workers at the lower levels are fantastic and departments are trying their best. There is a cafeteria on site at the corporate location, which is nice. Hoping that management recognizes that the if the baseline expectation is to overwork the staff, burnout and turnover are guaranteed and you lose some good people.

If you want to spend no time with your family, this is the place for you!

You are only a number there. You are expected to spend all your time at work. In fact, you should work for free in their eyes. Anyone off the street can be hired to do your job is their mentality.

Absolutely no training and if you do something wrong but didn’t train you on the process it’s your fault and not managing supervisors fault

Worst place ever and needs a union. No training or responsibility from management. If you get a job there don’t expect to be around to long. Most of the staff is inexperienced and never done the job in the past. It’s a thumbs down place

Horrible place to work.

12 days on 2 days off 10 to 12 hours a day. Management doesn't respect employees. No tools for the job. If you don't kiss a!! You won't move up. Also allot of backstabbing and unrealistic expectations. If they want you fired they will make your life miserable till you mentally break down or lie about you so they can fire you

Challenging but rewarding work environment

Holtec engineers, manufactures, constructions, services, and decommissions nuclear power power facilities, nuclear fuel storage and transport equipment. As you can imagine this takes critical thinking, highly educated, and highly motivated employees to accomplish. This also comes with significant pressure to perform to perfection, meet tough deadlines, and to it with highly reliable safety and quality performance.

good place to pick up new skills. Horrible management

management is learning as they go which is bad for a nuclear manufacturing facility. They play favorites. regular employees are fine. management is the worst, from the top down.

Good pay, terrible management.

The place pays good and has good benefits but management is terrible. Constantly being talked down on. They promote a “questioning attitude” but when you try to suggest a idea to help the job go by smoother you get your head chopped off. A lot of people will throw you under the bus as well.

Stressful environment, lots of responsibility

Stressful place where a lot of responsibility is forced onto new and young employees with little to no help. Everything is always late so the company always focuses on what is the worst issue at the time and there is very little guidance towards success. The training is very basic and not entirely helpful, partially since the turn over rate of employees is very high and most of the knowledge of the jobs is held within the upper management whom also don't have time to train.The hardest part is trying to work towards all of the deliverables needed, but since every group is so far behind on work, it makes it pretty hard to meet due dates. Then you have to deal with all the outcomes of missing dates from both upper management and the clients. Furthermore, your responsibility is so high in the projects it makes it tough to take days off especially when you are the only person involved on your projects.

Good pay, Terrible benefits

The pay is better than most shops around here but they don’t give paid time off or let you request time off like other places. It is terrible in that aspect. It’s a union job but it doesn’t feel like it. Union representation is poor and they are super strict about missing time off for any reason. They don’t understand or care about the fact that people have families and health issues they need to take care of regularly even if you don’t miss a single day for over a year. I’ve had way better benefits and paid time off at non-union jobs. Even service employees get better benefits and paid time off. They care very little for the satisfaction or well-being of their employees. The only thing keeping most people there is that it pays a little better than most other welding jobs in Pittsburgh but it doesn’t even pay better than all of them.

Not much good but plenty of bad. It has a cafeteria.

They talk about safety but always look the other way if they need something done. The supervisors are all yes men that aren’t that knowledgeable in the area that they oversee. The benefits are good but that’s all. They are constantly trying to get rid of the people that don’t kiss up to management. They have welding supervisors that don’t know how to weld (how is that smart). You always do jobs over and over because there’s no communication throughout the entire shop. No one is happy. I’ve never seen any place like it in my 30 years of working. The culture is insane,and they don’t practice what they preach. They will unionize soon but the company is doing all that they can to stop it.

...the negatives are 100% accurate. Harsh work environment. Micromanagement. Work/Life balance non-existent. Utter lack of processes and blame is rampant.

terrible management team. wonderful administrative staff. unfair treatment to the craft and supervisors. it did not matter what you did, it was the wrong decision. this leads to poor communication on managements end. although, that is of course where it did not fall.

Poor leadership, no training set up to fail

Such a shame this place could be great! But the management is set in their ways. There is very little training. Everyone will expect you to know everything within 6 months, after that they will just be rude and talk down to you. You are set up to fail from the moment you walk in, you will be completely over worked and you will feel the stress of the job and bring home that stress. This is not a 9-5 job, they will expect you to work overtime for no pay. Your immediate peer group is amazing, everyone there is extremely helpful. But anyone that is in management will eventually just beat you down. Beautiful campus, on site cafeteria, pay is decent, 401k plenty of vacation. Unfortunately when you use your vacation the work doesn't stop and you will just do double time when you return, or you will work on vacation to try to stay caught up. If you decide to join the HOLTEC team just be warned they will micro manage your til you crack! From weekly reports on what you do, to personal evaluations. But don’t worry, it’s meaningless and no one reads any of it.

Terrible place

Management at this company is absolutely toxic from the CEO on down. I can't even begin to describe how bad it is. Management goes out of their way to reinforce that you are worthless in their eyes. The HR manager is of particular note for playing favorites. It's a union shop, but it's the weakest, most poorly run union I've ever seen. Overall, you'll be paid pretty well, and since it's nuclear welding, it looks good on a resume. But it's an awful awful place, and you'll hate every moment of the day working there. Also, the benefits are good expensive, and nearly impossible to use. I'm VERY glad I left

Okay not bad

pretty good so far no complaints seems legit and good pay benefits location is cool tooneed more breaks easy job and workplace good hours but kinda long
