Terrible culture/management
Adjuster (Former Employee) –  Irving, TXAugust 13, 2019
Pros

Good vacation, PTO, nice coworkers, and nice faculties.

Cons

Management here is terrible and is seriously ruining the company. There is a “gotcha” mentality and it’s not possible to meet all of their expectations or meet goals all the time due to the volume and workload. Micromanaging here is the worst I’ve ever seen and management in general just seems incompetent. Files are documented incorrectly but if you don’t document that in your files it can be deemed as “not following management direction” and you can get written up. They seem to have a running list of things that you aren’t doing right. Another thing I’ve noticed here is management tends to retaliate and they bully people and act more like prison guards then a source of support. Culture here is so toxic and it made the job unbearable.

Claims Examiner (Former Employee) –  Irving, TXJuly 20, 2019
Work there I learned how a company should not be run and how not to treat employees. I would never recommend anyone work there unless they needed training to move one to a much better company but let them foot the bill for your training.
Pros
The training was extensive
Cons
Literally everything else

Upper Management all from outside horace mann. They bring the culture they know, allstate and now state farm and expect to plug big company culture into a small company. Losing policy count laid off several people in March

Toxic work environment and terrible culture
Claims Adjuster (Former Employee) –  Irving, TXMay 31, 2019
The only good thing about Horace Mann is the 401k. The job is stressful because the adjusters are under paid and over worked. They keep hiring new upper manager with their 100k salary but don’t care about the adjusters. The environment is really bad. I mean everyone there is looking for a new job. The culture is bad because management gossip like a bunch of school girls instead of LEADING their team. Long story short: Horace Mann is where careers go to die.
Pros
401k plan
Cons
High deductible insurance, stressful environment, management is s revolving door. Negative culture. Low pay. Terrible structure

Property Adjuster (Current Employee) –  Irving, TXMay 21, 2019
Great work environment, teamwork was practiced daily, competitive pay was also a great perk. Location of the job was fresh in Irving, and it provided challenges throughout the entire department.

Stressful!
Liability Claims Adjuster (Current Employee) –  Irving, TXApril 9, 2019
Management unreliable , yet micromanaged. They can take off, but the adjuster cant due to high claim volumes- Mgmt is good at managing numbers not people. They don't support the adjusters. Adjusters deal with unreasonable call volume with no time to adjust claims which leads to high claim count due to no closures of claims. Deal with outdated equipment and poor technology.

At Horace Mann, the employees take the fall for everything that goes wrong. Management never admits any faults and they are always hiring new VP. The turn over rate is extremely high.

Management was a joke at Horace Mann and it did no good to try to resolve any issues because management did not have your back nor did they hear you out.

I would not recommend working at this company. The procedures are ever changing, management has an uncaring attitude, the pay is not competitive, and upper management is very fake.

Senior Claims Representative (Former Employee) –  Irving, TXNovember 9, 2017
There was a huge turn over. Not enough staff to handle all the claim volume. No work/Life balance and had to work extra hours to stay on top of your claims. If not, you were told you have a few weeks to catch up or be out of a job. Management is horrible as they rather get bonuses than proactively hire so the staff does not have to be overly stressed.

Management Is the Problem
Auto Physical Adjuster (Former Employee) –  Irving, TXApril 11, 2017
Horace Mann could be a great company but the management team is poor and micromanage associates who are poorly trained. Advancement is predicated on who you know and who likes you. If you like corporate politics, you will love Horace Mann.

Claims Adjuster (Former Employee) –  Irving, TXJuly 6, 2016
A typical work day was at an accelerated rate to investigate and to finalize on a claim. Adjusters also subrogated their own files, settled the Total Loss' of their files, and wore multiple hats that most carriers have departmentalized. It was also customary to work your colleagues files when their calls rolled over to your phone line.

The Adjusters were forced to be "self-managing".

The coworkers were very pleasant but ALL had the look of hopelessness due to excessive work load, the increasing pressures of the required task and late hours to stay afloat; colleagues were each others support system.

Recognition by paper & trophy rewards

Claims Manager (Former Employee) –  Irving TxApril 30, 2015
This company is disorganized and poorly run. Inadequate training will set you up for failure. The training offered does not show you how to do the actual job... complete waste of time. Unfair performance reviews will overshadow your hard work and determination. The senior management cannot be trusted and they will actually lie to your face. Extremely low pay based on other local companies. They have no dignity so don't let them take yours. The workload is EXTREMELY high because 75% of the employees have already quit for employers with more integrity. Trust...all employees want to quit including other managers! If you apply you might get hired because they are desperate but you will surely regret your decision.

If they call hang up the phone.

Counselors are treated the worst out of all positions.
Cons
no promotional opportunities, no room for advancement.

Insurance Adjuster (Former Employee) –  Irving, TXDecember 7, 2014
As an adjuster, the roles were separate. For example, Bi adjusters only handled bodily injury, PD adjusters only did property damage and Pip/Medpay adjusters only handled PIP and Medpay.

Unhappy, Tired Claims Counselor.
Claim Counselor (Current Employee) –  Irving, TXJuly 20, 2014
My recommendation, don't work here. None of the counselors have anything good to say about this company. You'll be back on indeed in no time if you accept a position. You will be drained emotionally and physically each day of working here. Management will not train you but they will expect for you to figure out how to do the job on your own. You will be micro managed and dragged through the mud by the worst management is history.

You'll work at least 10 hours per day plus Saturdays. No OT or incentive pay for the extra hours. If you refuse to work the extra hours they will fire you. Do yourself a favor and think twice before accepting an offer with the claims division.

Just Terrible Leadership
Claims Counselor (Former Employee) –  Irving, TXMay 29, 2014
The leadership in the Irving, TX office are tterrible. Yes terrible with two ts.The company is going through a bad stage and management is not helping at all. 12 hr days 6 days per week or you lose your job. Not worth it for me. Turnover is insane. Training is pitiful. If you take the job as a CC, you will quickly find out why turnover is so high. Until the corner offices get fired or leave, run and don't look back. This grass is brown, dead, overgrown with weeds the size of Spruce trees. If you value work/life balance, forget about HM until they get it together.

Productive Small Company
Loss Reporter (Former Employee) –  IrvingMay 20, 2013
Day consisted or being on and ready on the phone at the start of the shift. Taking calls for auto and property damage, and either keeping them or sending them to correct department. I learned a lot of the how the insurance business works and different laws you have to follow in order to remain compliant with all Department of Insurance. Have wonderful co workers that tried to help each other out when we were not in. Everyone pitched in to help out. Management is readily available and friendly. The hardest part of the job is trying to calm someone down who has been in an accident. That being said it is also the most rewarding when you are able to help out.
Pros
Employee recognition and activities
Cons
Very Long hours per day
