Toxic work environment and terrible culture
Claims Adjuster (Former Employee) –  Irving, TXMay 31, 2019
The only good thing about Horace Mann is the 401k. The job is stressful because the adjusters are under paid and over worked. They keep hiring new upper manager with their 100k salary but don’t care about the adjusters. The environment is really bad. I mean everyone there is looking for a new job. The culture is bad because management gossip like a bunch of school girls instead of LEADING their team. Long story short: Horace Mann is where careers go to die.
Pros
401k plan
Cons
High deductible insurance, stressful environment, management is s revolving door. Negative culture. Low pay. Terrible structure

Liability Claims Adjuster (Current Employee) –  Irving, TXApril 9, 2019
Management unreliable , yet micromanaged. They can take off, but the adjuster cant due to high claim volumes- Mgmt is good at managing numbers not people. They don't support the adjusters. Adjusters deal with unreasonable call volume with no time to adjust claims which leads to high claim count due to no closures of claims. Deal with outdated equipment and poor technology.

Claims Adjuster (Former Employee) –  Morrisville, NCMarch 15, 2018
Horrible place to work. If you like kissing butt, then you may get promoted. You won't for your knowledge and how well you do your job.

Wish I could have rated them zero stars.
Pros
Not working there anymore.
Cons
Working there.

Claims Adjuster (Former Employee) –  Irving, TXJuly 6, 2016
A typical work day was at an accelerated rate to investigate and to finalize on a claim. Adjusters also subrogated their own files, settled the Total Loss' of their files, and wore multiple hats that most carriers have departmentalized. It was also customary to work your colleagues files when their calls rolled over to your phone line.

The Adjusters were forced to be "self-managing".

The coworkers were very pleasant but ALL had the look of hopelessness due to excessive work load, the increasing pressures of the required task and late hours to stay afloat; colleagues were each others support system.
Pros
Frequent Employee recognition
Cons
Recognition by paper & trophy rewards

This company is horrible. The management is the worst and will lie to you daily about EVERYTHING! Everyday you fear you will be fired for the simplest things. They are ridiculously understaffed but expect you to still perform as if they over staffed. You will work on average 10 hrs a day for 6 days or maybe 12 hrs a day for 5. The benefits are not really all that. Everyone complains daily about working for the company. And don't bother saying anything to HR... You will be fired for it. Training is set up for failure. Technology is about 8 years behind. Management will throw you under the bus in a second to save their own skin. The company is VERY unorganized and it is a big popularity contest. No room for advancement unless you go behind people's backs to get it

You will be looking for a new job with in 3-6 months

Pay is decent

Claims Adjuster (Former Employee) –  Morrisville, NCDecember 30, 2014
The people are great a very family oriented atmosphere. Benefits and 401K are pretty good compared to industry standard. Pay is average for industry standard. Segmentation was just initiated so duties are excessive compared to the industry. In my tenure there, management is reactive not proactive. Something that happens annually shouldn't come as a shock and be met with no preparation. Most subordinates are looked at as just a number. The turn over rate is high so staffing is always an issue causing the remaining people to be overworked and interfering with their work/life balance.
