Director - Income Tax (Former Employee) –  Springfield, ILMarch 20, 2018
Working at Horace Mann was very rewarding. The work was always challenging which made coming to work fun. The people are the number one asset of the company. Everyone is willing to assist you in anyway to get work complete. To show appreciation to the employees there was an after busy season party.

Claims Adjuster (Former Employee) –  Morrisville, NCMarch 15, 2018
Horrible place to work. If you like kissing butt, then you may get promoted. You won't for your knowledge and how well you do your job.

Wish I could have rated them zero stars.
Pros
Not working there anymore.
Cons
Working there.

Lucrative business
Office Manager (Former Employee) –  Orlando, FLMarch 11, 2018
Although prospecting is getting tougher with the internet age and more and more consumers shopping and buying insurance online, the insurance business can be very lucrative.

Lack of support from management, you're on your own to figure it out!!
Agent (Former Employee) –  United StatesFebruary 14, 2018
You're on your own to figure out how to run and support your agency. The systems they use are very outdated and it takes an outrageously long time to get things issued. The products are overpriced for anyone who does not have a perfect record.

Insurance Sales Agent (Current Employee) –  Mesa, AZFebruary 3, 2018
The company paid for my licensing and were extremely helpful in developing my knowledge of Insurance. A typical work day included quoting new leads, calling hot leads, filing new business. Management was efficient and let me operate on my own. Hardest part was dealing with the high rates of the company.

Great Corporation
Licensed Producer (Former Employee) –  South Portland, MEJanuary 10, 2018
This is a well run company with a strong and noble mission. My interactions with the home office that services the independent agents and customers was absolutely fabulous, whereas, not so much my experience working with the independent agent. Your experience will completely depend on the independent agent you work for.
Pros
lots of problem solving
Cons
independent agents are not company employees

Owner/Principal (Former Employee) –  Franklin, TNDecember 20, 2017
If you get assigned to a good territory, it can be a lucrative position. However, the ability to network internally is challenging and there is a lot of outdated technology and manual workarounds.

Great people, very little career track
Business Development Leader (Former Employee) –  Springfield, ILDecember 5, 2017
Typical week: tons of autonomy over work schedule and tasks. Schedule can be flexible at times, as long as goals are met.

Management: Direct supervisor did very little in terms of mentoring, career and personal development plans, and providing job guidance.

Best part of the job: helping educators secure their future

Worst part of the job: No track to move up in position in the company or in career. Very top heavy management structure with no defined succession plan .

Needs a lot of improvement
Senior Claims Representative (Former Employee) –  Irving, TXNovember 9, 2017
There was a huge turn over. Not enough staff to handle all the claim volume. No work/Life balance and had to work extra hours to stay on top of your claims. If not, you were told you have a few weeks to catch up or be out of a job. Management is horrible as they rather get bonuses than proactively hire so the staff does not have to be overly stressed.
Pros
Semi-good pay / benefits
Cons
Bad company structure and management

Bad environment
Analyst (Former Employee) –  Home-officeOctober 16, 2017
Managers often are virtually located across the US and rarely come into the home office, yet are expected to lead an entire team when they have no clue what is happening. Politics and back-stabbing is the culture. There was an internal employee survey and over 90% said the environment was incredibly negative and very cut-throat. Loyalty is non-existent. People only care about themselves. Be warned.
Cons
Terrible management

Insurance & Retirement company in a good niche
Market Research Mgr (Current Employee) –  Springfield, ILSeptember 12, 2017
Company has a great target market in which to operate with the educators of public K12 being their historical base. They have the potential to grow in that market as well as the private sector and post-secondary as well.
Pros
Niche, niche, niche

The whole thing about this job, is I am actually work for the it department. But the manager is not good. She cares about the time or due day, but not how as each employee will brainstorm and work together as a team.
