Hostelling International
Hostelling International Hostel Assistant Review
Good place to work, little room for advancement
Hostel Assistant (Former Employee) - California - September 30, 2021
As with most front-line hospitality roles, there's little room for advancement, which led to a bit of boredom and stagnation for me after a few years. The PTO is quite good and they cover nearly all of your medical benefit costs. They try to do great, with meaningful missions, but can miss the mark on inclusiveness at times, in part due to shared accommodation settings and trying to please other guests. The pay is probably about average for the industry.
Pros
Medical and Dental Benefits, great PTO accumulation, positive mission, free stays at HIUSA hostels
Cons
mediocre pay, little room for advancement, stagnation

Easy Going Environment
Live-In Hostel Assistant (Former Employee) - Eastham, MA - November 29, 2016
I worked at one of HI's seasonal hostels and I enjoyed the fun loving attitude of the management and the easy going atmosphere of the workplace. An average day could consist of laying out breakfast for guests, cleaning rooms and the main area, checking guests in, doing laundry, answering guest inquiries, and much more!
You absolutely must be good with people, even more so if you have a live-in position. It can be wearing. But some guests are amazing and make it all worth it. I loved the people I worked with and that made the hard days so much better.
If you like helping people and cleaning, and you want free food and potentially free housing, then this job is for you.
Pros
Free food, free housing, laid back atmosphere
Cons
Constant Guest Inquiries
