HR (Current Employee) –  Medina, OHApril 17, 2015
if you are looking for stability, this is not the company to work for. You will need to work more than 40 hours to get your work done.

If you are a minority, this is not the company to build your career. Minorities are paid below, non-minorities in the same position.

Has absolutely no loyalty to there employees

Very low moral

Not everything that glow is gold

I would stay far away
Logistics manager (Current Employee) –  Medina ohioFebruary 19, 2015
THE ONE in Medina is run by very closed.minded people who are not open to new ideas or change. It's their way or your out. The salary is well below most comparable job descriptions and get used to alot of overtime with no extra incentives. The materials coordinator position woman is quite abrasive and you better not have a better idea than her. I know I worked.there. I would re consider as the company is out dated and no change in sight.
Pros
lunch
Cons
management salary working conditions

Depot Manager
depot manager (Former Employee) –  kentOctober 26, 2014
yes all the perks one thinks the size this company has on offer, the area management drive the business by bullying stressful the vast time of my career. The first few years was great family feel, as another depot manager put it should had left a few years prior. Yes they offer great bonus payments but if you fail to attend the out of office meetings your going to pay for it.So any one wanting a career pick another firm the ceo is at most a guy who spreads fear amongst his senior management they are scared to say what they think.the times at meetings the area managers get a few managers to tell this chief executive a load of bull to make them look good....... Mmmmm
They entertain the depot managers well that's for sure but the pressure on the home life is just not worth it and yes they do bully the depot managers daily.having a depot with the same staff is impossible to keep because of staff moving out allows staff to constantly moving how can you work like that the builders just think it's down to the poor managers if only they knew the true story.
There are much better companies out there and who really care more about there managers. The comment to younger managers coming through that's a joke my day was about knowledge today the new area managers are just kids with a high ego with no brains
Pros
leaving This post
Cons
bonus losses when staff mucked up

High Pressure, demanding stressful but rewarding.
Management (Former Employee) –  Wales areaJune 3, 2013
I was an employee at management level for 13 years, loved the first 9 years but hated the remainder.Initially was a very fair, enjoyable organisation. In the early years could have seen myself there for many years.
As one of your previous reviews states once the economy changed so did Howdens with an environment that was full of fear, aggression, being bullied and lack of respect.
Had no regrets about being employed by them but I should have left sooner before it all changed. To be employed by them today you have to have a thick skin and be able to take a lot of flack.
They have lost many long serving members of staff in the latter few years and are being replaced by many 20 somethings who think they know it all.
Pros
well paid, good perks.Company car.
Cons
long hours, stressful

Hard work, but can be rewarding
Sales Rep, Business Developer (Current Employee) –  North West EnglandApril 21, 2013
Howdens is about sales, basically - but what do you expect? The upper management culture is a tad out of the Ark, but local management is as good as the person doing it... Personally, I have been treated very well, with my managers understanding personal issues (bereavement, for example), being extremely flexible and supportive. They expect a lot, but if you are treated as a person then you don't mind going the extra mile. The Christmas bonus is pretty good (if you've had a good period 11!), and the staff fund means the Xmas do is a freebie, as well as other social activities. If you're not afraid of hard work, it's a good company to work for
Pros
bonus scheme, understanding of personal issues, great team
Cons
could use it more effectively
