It's hot in the summer and freezing in the winter. Being a good worker doesn't get you moved up in the company, I've had a Foreman tell me that himself. Most of the time it's the apprentices or through affirmative action that people move up the quickest, and the company is VERY open about that. Your foreman can be amazing or a straight garbage leader. Your crew can have folk who are nice and hard-working, or they can be toxic and lazy, it's really a roll of the dice, I've seen it all. The painting trade (X33) is often discriminated against when going to a tool room. Personally, I've been lied to my face when asking for a tool only for me to see the guy behind me get it as I walk out the line, or I'll mention one that's in plain view just for them to say, "Oh it's broken.". Also it's not the most intellectually stimulating environment to work in, things get extremely repetitive VERY quickly. Moreover, there's a huge problem with Huntington Ingalls tradesman being lazy and dragging work out. On top of that, a lot of female workers within the painting department (but not all) are put on a pedestal and won't even have to lift a finger to work. Sometimes your work is so light, trivial, and mundane you'll have to struggle to stay awake and alert. Other times you could be behind schedule and running your body into the ground trying to get the job done, which is NEVER worth it imo. Oh and It's a shipyard so danger presents itself in the most unapologetic fashion in many places of the yard. Union dues are incredibly low, ironically the Union has an iron grip on the yard, if you're comfortable going to your foreman talk to them please. Insurance is cheap, but paid time off is a pile of garbage. You get a whopping total of 40 hours of use it or lose it paid time off. And this is assuming you have perfect attendance the entire year. Some crews struggle to find work just for the weekday. Other crews are working 10 or 12 hour shifts shifts 5-7 days a week. Having great people in my crew and a particular foreman I've taken a liking to for his humor, fair treatment of workers and his strong competency of the job has made the work bearable and at times delightful. If it wasn't for them this place would be depressing. Your mileage may vary.
