Awesome company with amazing benefits
Medical Laboratory Technologist (Former Employee) –  Cambridge, MAMarch 12, 2019
Awesome company with amazing benefits. If they had a lab in the East coast, I would love to work there again.
They also care very much about people having access to genetic information that will be helpful to them and their family.
Pros
great benefits
Cons
no lab on eastcoast

Great for people coming out of school but terrible for seasoned workers
Client Service Specialist (Former Employee) –  San Francisco, CAJanuary 22, 2019
Please be aware of Management here. Employees within Client Services and Billing are over worked. The pay does not reflect well on the cost of living in San Francisco. Bonuses are tricky and can be based on a sub-par performance review system. Management is very cliquey. Make sure everything is in writing if you communicate with them. For the company to be in SF, it's not very diverse racially. Weekly company lunches are always great to look forward to. Internships for students here are great. The experience in the lab is well worth it. Client Service Department needs work.
Pros
Free lunch once a twice a week, Paid Vacations for full-time employees, great location in SF
Cons
Management, Client Services department, Billing department, Performance review system

Invitae - medical genetics & DNA sequencing
Sr. Software QA Automation Engineer (Former Employee) –  San Francisco, CAJune 18, 2018
Invitae is an incredibly great company to work for! The work environment is very positive and open. Everyone in the company is approachable and willing to listen and collaborate.

Titles and ego's are minimized, left at the door and everyone is expected to contribute their input, opinions, decisions, and hard work. There's lots of training and innovation inside the company. They put 100% trust in you, but also expect 100% out of you as well. It's a balance of working independently and collaboratively when needed.

Invitae is an agile company running on 2-week sprints, and focused on feature releases, revolutionizing the medical genetics industry.

They have the best 360 review system I've ever worked with in my 21 yr career in software.

On a typical day I'd meet with the with software developers and/or testers to problem solve the testing process, train current testers on the automation framework, maintain our CI/CD process or work with DevOps to streamline issues and functionality. On other days I'd have meetings with our offshore teams, or project managers and SQA team leads to optimize the test management process or strategies.
Pros
The benefits are robust, very good healthcare coverage, lots of free food/weekly lunches, reimbursement of commute expenses, flexible hours and work remote policies, generous high-quality swag and the newest laptops, and peripherals
Cons
the direction of the company is not always easy to understand, the growth of the company has possibly been a bit too fast

Mission focused
Commercial (Former Employee) –  San Francisco Bay Area, CAJune 11, 2018
Invitae is a well run, intense start-up that is scaling towards accomplishing a broad mission to push genetic testing into the normal healthcare system. Overall I had a very positive experience, the culture is open, direct, and healthy. Conflicts are resolved in an open way for the good of the team. The best part of the job is the shear number of programs you can participate in to help patients.
Pros
Great mission, excellent leadership, good people to work with, direct culture, value placed on work, very few politics, good options for working remotely
Cons
no focus on career development, poor performance management, no clearly defined roles/responsibilities, weak emphasis on good team management

Disorganize and Lack of Transparency
Research Associate (Former Employee) –  San Francisco, CAApril 17, 2018
Flat structure at Invitae make it hard for anyone to get help and train properly. Lack of structure management mean you have to figure out what was going on in the group by yourself and what projects you needed to work on. Lack of structure mean everyone in the company gave you review and sometimes they were anonymous. People were so caught up about getting good reviews that they will be fake nice and fake helpful to you. Those same people would give you bad reviews anonymously and saying that you were not smart enough or work not hard enough. People want to get good review so bad that they would act smart and know it all and become very difficult to rely on them.

Pro about the company is unlimited vacation and good benefit for a start up.
Pros
twice weekly lunches, monthly happy hours, good benefit for start up
Cons
Watch your back, Burning out cash too much, lack of profit, lack of collaboration

chaotic reporting structure
Laboratory Director (Former Employee) –  San Francisco, CASeptember 22, 2017
lack of hierarchies and reporting structures doesn't always work. Fast paced and intelligent work force well versed in software and wet lab NGS proceses
